Main Objective

To provide independent thirdparty inspection services during the qualification of welding procedures, welders,

operators, and brazers for a key client in Bureau Veritas. The role ensures full compliance with BS EN ISO 15614, BS EN ISO 9606, and any applicable construction codes through verification, witnessing, and inspection activities.

Key Responsibilities

 

Welding & Brazing Procedure Qualification

Verify that all Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQRs) comply with BS EN ISO 15614 and other applicable fabrication codes.

Witness the welding or brazing of all test coupons in accordance with the approved procedures.

Confirm that essential variables, consumables, joint preparations, and heat input parameters meet standard requirements.

 

Welder, Operator & Brazer Qualification

Validate that all welders, operators, and brazers are qualified to BS EN ISO 9606 or the relevant qualification code. Ensure welding personnel follow the required test methods, positions, joint types, and process conditions.

Inspection & Testing

Oversee and verify all NonDestructive Testing (NDT) and Mechanical Testing conducted on procedure qualification and welder qualification test coupons.

Review test results for compliance and identify any nonconformities.

Ensure correct documentation and traceability of materials, consumables, and samples.

 

Documentation & Reporting

Prepare and review PQRs, Welder Qualification Records (WQRs), Operator Qualification Records, and Brazing Qualification Records.

Issue thirdparty inspection reports and certification packages.

Maintain accurate records and ensure alignment with Bureau Veritas quality processes.

 

Compliance & Safety

Ensure that all inspection activities comply with relevant quality, safety, and environmental standards. Promote adherence to site safety procedures during welding and testing operations.

Minimum Requirements

 

  • ISO 9712 Level II or III (or equivalent) in relevant NDT methods (MT, PT, UT, RT advantages).
  • Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), CSWIP 3.1/3.2, or IIW/EWF IWI-S or IWI-C qualification or SAIW L2.
  • In-depth working knowledge of:
  • BS EN ISO 15614 series for procedure qualification
  • BS EN ISO 9606 series for welder qualification

 

Valid driver’s licence and willingness to work on-site in Johannesburg.

  • Strong technical report writing and communication skills.

Key Knowledge and Experience

Technical Expertise

  • Comprehensive understanding of welding processes (SMAW, GTAW/TIG, GMAW/MIG, FCAW, SAW, brazing processes, etc.).
  • Experience witnessing or conducting PQR and WPS development.
  • Practical knowledge of destructive testing (tensile, bend, impact, hardness) and NDT interpretation.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, fabrication codes, and acceptance criteria.

 

Regulatory & Standards Knowledge

Strong knowledge of:

  • BS EN ISO 15614 – Welding Procedure Qualification
  • BS EN ISO 9606 – Welder Qualification Testing
  • other construction codes (ASME IX, AWS D1.1, EN 13445, etc.)

 

Quality Assurance & Compliance

  • Experience in thirdparty inspection environments.
  • Familiarity with QMS systems such as ISO 9001 and traceability requirements.
  • Strong understanding of material certification, consumable control, and QA documentation.

Certification Requirements

  • Valid Electrical Installation License
  • Registered with Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA)
  • Up-to-date Occupational Health and Safety certification

Experience

  • Minimum 8–10 years’ experience in welding inspection, with strong exposure to procedure and welder qualification testing.

Competencies

  • Excellent communication, client-facing and coordination skills.
  • High attention to detail, objectivity, and professional integrity.
  • Ability to work independently and deliver on tight schedules.
