Position Summary

A Telecom Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing telecommunications equipment and systems. This role involves working with various communication technologies including telephone systems, internet infrastructure, fiber optic cables, and wireless communication equipment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install and configure telecommunications equipment (routers, switches, modems, PBX systems)
  • Set up fiber optic and copper cable networks
  • Mount and connect antennas, transmitters, and receivers
  • Install customer premises equipment (CPE)
  • Perform routine maintenance on telecom infrastructure
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot network connectivity issues
  • Repair or replace faulty equipment and components
  • Test signal strength and quality using specialized equipment

 

Qualifications & Experience

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Technical/Vocational Certification in Telecommunications
  • Associate's Degree in Electronics or related field (preferred)

 

Years of Experience

  • 2-5 years of experience in telecommunications or fiber optic systems
  • Hands-on experience with fiber splicing and termination
  • Project management experience preferred
  • Experience with Tanzanian telecommunications infrastructure advantageous

Industry Exposure

  • Experience in oil & gas, substations, or industrial automation projects involving tele- com is an added advantage

Technical Tool/Software Proficiency

  • Network configuration tools (e.g., Cisco, HP, or equivalent)
  • Fiber test tools (OTDR, power meters)
  • IP addressing and VLAN management platforms
  • Microsoft Office Suite

Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of telecom systems: fiber optics, IP telephony, UHF/VHF radios, and industrial Ethernet.
  • Experience with fiber termination, splicing, and testing procedures.
  • Network infrastructure knowledge
  • Fiber optic and copper cable installation
  • Telecommunications equipment maintenance
  • Signal transmission and reception technologies
  • Troubleshooting and diagnostic capabilities Knowledge of structured cabling standards and best practices for equipment room layouts.
  • Basic understanding of cybersecurity measures in industrial network design.

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Safety-aware and compliant with site HSE policies.
  • Proactive and flexible in adapting to technical and environmental challenges.

Preferred Additional Qualifications

  • Certification in fiber optic installation or network design (e.g., CCNA, FOA).
  • Fluency in English required; French or Swahili is a plus.

 

Performance Measurement (KPIs)

  • % of telecom systems installed and commissioned on schedule
  • Signal quality, availability, and redundancy test results
  • Number of telecom-related NCRs or configuration issues
  • Quality of telecom documentation and rack layouts
