Position – Senior Chemist/Laboratory Coordinator
Reporting to – UK Laboratory Manager
Product Group and Location – Oil and Petrochemical, Immingham
Purpose of role
To produce analytical results to a high degree of accuracy, either individually or as part of a team, to pre-set targets, within parameters and Key Performance Indicators defined by the UK Laboratory Manager. Coordinating daily analytical workloads, liaising and interfacing with clients and organising out of hours cover.
Duties
All duties to be carried out in accordance with the Divisional UKAS ISO 17025 Accreditation, ISO 9001 Certification, Client Guidelines, Bureau Veritas Commodities UK Procedures, Health, Safety & Environmental policies, including the Health & Safety at Work Act (including COSHH), or any other recognised standards as appropriate.
Operations
- Manage and meet Clients analytical expectations by means of Contract Review / acceptance of nomination for lab capabilities within KPI guidelines.
- Preparation and review of analytical documentation. Authorised signatory for result release to clients. Control of filing and storage of completed reports.
- To supervise and perform analysis on a wide range of Petroleum and Petrochemical products at the Immingham Laboratory and possibly other laboratories under the control or jurisdiction of the region, under own initiative, in strict accordance with the relevant ISO17025 / Approved In – House controlled procedures.
- To liaise with clients on a day-to-day basis on operational and technical issues.
- To draw samples from various locations such as Refineries, Storage Terminals, Marine Tankers, and Road Vehicles for the purposes of Analysis or sample dispatch requirements, in strict accordance with relevant IP / ASTM / ISO / API or internal procedures.
- Primary Laboratory Contact for the Immingham facility.
Quality
- Ownership of calibration management systems, supervising and performing periodic calibrations of Laboratory instruments, internally or externally.
- To Investigate and report on quality incidents, near misses etc to UK Laboratory Manager.
- Perform Local Conformance Auditing of Immingham & Satellite Laboratory Systems.
- Evaluate Correlation and Proficiency Testing information, Investigate Outliers, control timescales and maintain records.
- To actively contribute to quality improvements and participate in ISO 17025 Quality Review Meetings.
- Communicate and offer full support to the UK Laboratory Manager.
- Ensure that the Laboratory has an efficient means of stock control that reflects a high degree of cost management.
Safety
- Safety – Representative for Immingham Laboratory, Control and Management of Safety, COSHH Assessments, MSDS Including safety walk rounds (Lab only).
- Promote safety and safe working practices within laboratory.
- To work in a safe manner, ensuring personal health and safety, and the safety of others is carefully considered during all operations.
- To ensure that the laboratory is clean and is a safe/efficient working environment for personnel.
Personnel
- Assign and coordinate the daily workload of the personnel within the Immingham Laboratory.
- Develop, monitor and review individually tailored training plans for all staff with assistance from the UK Laboratory Manager.
Client Maintenance
- Maintain existing client relationships and be the focal point for new clients when they come on board.
- To attend client visits with members of the UK Management Team or North West Europe Sales and Marketing Team.
General
- To effectively promote all laboratory services in order to maximize sales in a profitable manner.
- Any other reasonable request by Bureau Veritas Commodities UK, the UK General Manager or UK Laboratory Manager.
- Produce monthly bullet point report for the UK Laboratory Manager.
- To complete all necessary Company Policy documentation in a timely fashion e.g. Working Time Directive time logs, expenses etc.
Principal Accountabilities
- Ownership of Laboratory to produce analytical results to a high degree of accuracy, within Client’s time expectations, in accordance with their Instructions by means of thorough Contract Review Processes
- ISO 17025 – Accountable for the smooth running of UKAS systems within the Immingham Laboratory. Communicate and report to UK Laboratory Manager on any deviation from, or failure of methods, systems and procedures.
- Responsible for development of staff and structured training plans in accordance with company appraisal policy and guidelines.
- Responsible for the maintenance of standalone analytical clients for the Immingham Laboratory.
- Health and Safety Representative for Immingham Laboratory, Control and Management of Safety, COSHH Assessments, MSDS etc. in accordance with Company H&S policies.
- Personal adherence to Company Health & Safety policies.
Skills and Experience
- Demonstrable laboratory experience or Degree in relevant subject.
- A thorough knowledge of laboratory etiquette, and analytical methodology adopted by the Oil and Petrochemicals Industry.
- Ideally IOSH or NEBOSH Qualified.
- Team Player.
- A good communicator.
- Ability to run an efficient cost effective and safe laboratory.
- Holder of a valid UK driving licence (manual vehicle).
