Job Title: Laboratory Technician 1
Reports to: Laboratory Supervisor / Laboratory Manager
Department: Acid Rock Drainage Laboratory
Basic Purpose:
Responsible for performing routine and non-routine tests, instrument calibration and maintenance, and to provide general lab support and report preparation support in accordance with departmental standard operating procedures and health and safety policies.
Key Accountability/Responsibilities:
• Perform analysis on both water and solids samples
• Perform sample preparation, water extractions, humidity cell and column maintenance & operation, static tests and analyses using manual and automated techniques including pH, conductivity, ORP, acidity, alkalinity and kinetic reporting
• Receiving, login, crushing, and pulverizing of client mining samples
• Maintain and calibrate technical equipment
• Maintain detailed and accurate records for QC control charting
• Assist with the set-up of lab tests for the analysts as necessary
• Meet quality and TAT specifications required by the client and ensure samples are analyzed within holding time requirements
• Identify and communicate procedural non conformances with the lab manager
• Employ proper laboratory techniques to minimize risk of mislabeling, sample mix-up and cross contamination between samples and other materials
• Provide general lab support
• Provide general report preparation support
• Provide manager with updates on workstation status including advance notification of any delays
• Adhere to Bureau Veritas Code of Ethics Policy
• Support and comply with all Bureau Veritas policies, Quality System and Health & Safety program
• Participate, when requested in department and health and safety meetings
• Participate, when requested in internal and external audits
• Keep work area clean, neat and organized
• Maintain training records and relevant qualifications
Skills and Knowledge:
• Minimum Diploma from a Technician Institute (chemistry preferred) or post-secondary school education with at least 2 year laboratory experience
• Positive outlook with an ability to work in a fast paced environment
• Proficient in LIMS would be considered an asset
• Good time-management, communication, multi-tasking and priority setting skills
• Ability to be adaptable and flexible to a changing environment
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
• Detail orientated & good record keeping skills
• Good hand-eye coordination, to use technical equipment with accuracy
• Ability to accurately follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and instructions
• Ability to learn quickly
Working Conditions:
• High level of work production in fast paced lab environment
• May require flexible workings hours, overtime and shift work
• May involve long periods of standing
• Hazardous materials are handled using established safety procedures and appropriate PPE
• Physically challenged position and working environment involving heavy lifting, operating rock crushing equipment – working condition can be dusty
