LABORATORY TECHNICIAN

FOOD MICROBIOLOGY

As a LABORATORY TECHNICIAN, your responsibilities are:

 

  • Making of media, and preparing necessary supplies and reagents
  • Food and environmental sample preparation for microbiological testing
  • Reading, recording and reporting results for all soil and water microbiology tests
  • Preparation and disposal of used samples and supplies.
  • Identifying any non-routine samples and seek guidance on procedures for handling
  • Perform microbiological analysis using a variety of laboratory techniques as per SOPs. Prepare samples for more complex analytical testing procedures
  • Identifying and communicates procedural non-conformances to Supervisor
  • Helping ensure that samples are analysed within the holding time and turn-around-time requirements as specified by regulation and/or client demands. Notify senior staff in advance of problems that may affect this obligation
  • Supporting and enforce strict adherence to corporate Health and Safety policies
  • Performing all lab support duties, including sample archiving, laboratory cleaning and waste disposal
  • Performing other responsibilities as assigned

 

 

You are an ideal LABORATORY TECHNICIAN if you have:

 

  • Post-secondary education in Science
  • Work experience in a laboratory setting preferred
  • Theory and practice of aseptic techniques
  • Basic knowledge of Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
  • Ability to communicate in a professional and straight forward manner
  • Ability to work within a team-work environment as well as individually
  • Some lifting required (up to 20lbs)
  • Positive, dynamic, energetic, detail-oriented, organized and motivated work ethic
  • Able to work under pressure to meet changing deadlines and shifting priorities
  • Must be able to handle all kinds of food samples including (but not limited to) peanuts/nuts, raw meat, seafood, beer/wine, soy, dairy and wheat
  • Flexibility to work variety of shifts based on business needs, able to work afternoon shifts & weekends
