JOB DESCRIPTION 

 

 

POSITION:  Planner 

REPORTS TO: Director of Planning  

 

JOB SUMMARY:  

Perform professional review of zoning, platting and related development applications, review and interpret long range and comprehensive plans and development regulations, develop municipal planning documents and plans including amendments to/or preparation of new comprehensive plans, small area plans, and development ordinances, performs special planning projects.  

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Review and interpret long range and comprehensive plans and development regulations. 

  • Develop municipal planning documents and plans, including amendments to/or new comprehensive plans, small area plans, development ordinances, and alternative solutions to issues and concerns raised by Cities. 

  • Assist in developing, maintaining, updating, implementing and enforcing planning and zoning ordinances, and assist in maintaining official ordinances and maps. 

  • Present data, statistical and project information, development applications and proposed ordinances and development standards at public meetings. 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES 

  • Knowledge of urban planning, Texas land use laws and related regulations, codes and ordinances. 

  • Skill in effective oral and written communications. 

  • Skill in reviewing subdivisions, site plans and development proposals, layouts, plans and legal documents related to development and enforcement of ordinances, codes and regulations. 

  • Skill in working with elected officials and members of appointed boards and commissions. 

  • Knowledge of computers and related equipment, hardware and software for geographical information systems utilization and for layer based mapping preparation. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration, Landscape Architecture or related field. 

  • Five (5) years previous experience in urban planning, municipal planning or land development planning and project development.  

  • Willing to travel to all parts of the State of Texas. 

 

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS: 

  • Possesses valid Texas Class “C" license when hired. 

 

PREFERENCES: 

  • American Institute of certified Planners (AICP) Certification. 

  • Master’s degree in Planning, Geography, or closely related field. 

  • Ability to use AutoCAD.
