Please note that this position description is generic.  There will be some variability and unique requirements for specific locations at the intra and inter laboratory level.  Furthermore, there are unique requirements for specific shifts that are defined by the time of day and the day of week.

 

Summary:

  • Assists in keeping current of the latest technological development in its field and assists to continuously improve efficiency and client service and satisfaction to increase company profitability.
  • The Scientific Specialist acts as a resource to management and staff as required in order to work toward continuous improvement of both internal laboratory processes and internal and external customer satisfaction.
  • Maximizes human, equipment and financial resources and ensure that they are used appropriately.
  • Suggests new processes & procedures that will increase Maxxam’s market share, profile and profitability.
  • Facilitates the production of high quality defensible data, safely and on time.
  • Ensures methods in use meet current and proposed regulatory guidelines.

 

Duties

  • Adheres to Maxxam Code of Ethics Policy.
  • Supports and complies with all Maxxam policies, Quality System and Health & Safety program. 
  • Develops strategic plans with the objective of preparing the department for continued growth.
  • Develops and nurtures ongoing relationship with peers in other internal departments and its customers. Works to anticipate their needs and how the operation can meet and exceed their expectations.
  • With the Manager, assists in developing business plans that increase Maxxam’s profile in the region.
  • Evaluates changes in present procedures, which could improve efficiency, productivity, etc.
  • Remains current with all regulatory changes affecting Maxxam’s laboratory and ensures appropriateness of analytical methods and systems to meet these requirements.
  • Evaluates and validates potential methods for use within Maxxam and, where necessary, develops new methods.
  • Validates results before released to the clients.
  • Reviews alternative proposals for new technologies and recommends the ones with the best strategic return.
  • Elevates significant & complex resource issues to Manager.
  • Acts as technical resource for Manager, Client Services and staff.
  • Ensures that employees are following the SOPs and work to reduce non-conformances.
  • Documents method changes and new methods as Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Updates SOPs (either directly or via DCR) required from MIA finding or from NSC /CAR investigations.
  • Leads staff training.
  • Provides information, instructions, and assistance to all staff in order to protect the health and safety of our employees.
  • Understands and enforces our EHS Policy as well as the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Participates/performs in department and Health & Safety meetings.
  • Participates in monthly worksite inspections of their area.
  • Ensures hazard assessments and critical task analysis are done within their area of responsibility.
  • Ensures that Near Misses and Accidents are reported as per Corporate Standard.
  • Participates/performs, when requested in internal and external audits.
  • Maintains training records and relevant qualifications.
  • Maintains or establishes relationships with technology suppliers.
  • Provides technical support, guidance and leadership to Bureau Veritas Operational staff, as well as sales and customer service.
  • Works in the lab to process samples as and when needed.
  • When requested, provides the senior level data review to ensure the appropriate level of quality in all analytical data and processes to meet the needs of the customer.
  • For larger scale projects and for specific key clients, act as project manager.
  • Assists with the development and maintenance a positive work environment for employees.
  • Leads by example.
  • Acts as a positive change agent in supporting Maxxam’s new initiatives (operational and cultural).
  • Keeps work area clean, neat and organized.
  • All other responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated success in the role of Team Lead
  • 5 years of experience in specific environment of which 2 are at a senior level.

 

Education:

  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree preferably in food microbiology, food science or molecular biology and a minimum of 2-4 years of analytical experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Working Conditions:

  • May involve long periods of standing.
  • Some lifting and carrying (up to 10 kg).
  • Requires flexible working hours, overtime and shift work.
  • Hazardous materials are handled using established safety procedures and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
