SUMMARY:  The Senior Seismic Project Manager will primarily be responsible for performing probable maximum loss (PML) seismic risk assessments including visual examinations of building structures to identify structural components and seismic performance characteristics for commercial real estate due diligence; overseeing and reviewing PML assessments performed by other engineers, work may also include structural condition assessments and or property condition assessments.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other job related duties may be assigned in conformance with state and federal regulations.

 

  • Conduct structural and forensic investigations of properties
  • Perform Seismic Risk Assessments (SRA), Probable Maximum Loss (PML) Evaluations, and Earthquake Due Diligence Assessments of buildings using standard risk industry methodologies, in accordance with client prescribed scope of work or ASTM standards.
  • Prepare and review written reports to ASTM E2557-16a and ASTM E2026-16a
  • Conduct visual examinations of building structures to identify structural components and seismic performance characteristics of the subject properties. Provide photographic documentation of field conditions including building components, structural features, and property settings.
  • Conduct interviews with the owner (or their on-site representative), tenants, service providers, local government agencies, and other individuals knowledgeable about the subject property.
  • Review available property related documents including construction drawings, specifications, geotechnical reports, structural calculations, seismic retrofit plans, and prior engineering reports.
  • Review available seismic data base resources to identify property related seismic risks including fault hazards, ground shaking hazards, liquefaction hazards, site stability and historical earthquake activity.
  • Overseeing and reviewing PML assessments performed by other engineers.
  • Due to the possession of special skills or experience, may be assigned to perform various types of services such as, but not limited to: facility condition assessments, structural, mechanical, civil, or environmental surveys; pre-construction document reviews; construction monitoring; desk reviews; report reviews; or document review. This position may also be assigned to provide training programs.
  • May be required to climb ladders (including vertical ladders up multiple stories) and/or steep roof stairs for each building assessed (at least once per on-site assessment)
  • Ability to travel, on average, approximately 50% of time to client sites across the U.S. via plane and driving as determined based on the project location.  Common patterns of travel include one day on-site followed by one day at home.  The time at home is spent writing reports that communicate the field findings. Overnight stays away from home may be required.
  • Ability to use and skillfully operate a computer is essential to this position.
  • Ability to use and skillfully operate an electronic tablet efficiently in the field for live data collection is essential to this position.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  Directly supervises employees on the seismic project team.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include, developing and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering with a minimum of 10 years of experience in structural engineering of building, including 5 years of seismic design and analysis and 3 years’ experience performing Seismic Risk Assessments is required.

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Professional Engineer license is required.

 

Other Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with ASCE 41, FEMA P-154, and methods of estimating probability of collapse
  • Good verbal and written communications skills; good analytical skills and detail-oriented; ability to perform multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment; strong time management skills and ability to adhere to deadlines while maintaining accuracy; willing to challenge and ask questions; driven to achieve; ability to work independently, as well as in a team environment.

  • Travel is variable up to 50% depending on location. Ability to travel, on average, approximately 50% of time to client sites across the U.S. via plane and driving as determined based on the project location.
  • Ability to climb ladders (including vertical ladders up multiple stories) and/or steep roof stairs for each building assessed (at least once per on-site assessment)
  • Must have a clean driving record
  • Must be able to work from a remote location
  • Must have a cell phone and supply your own internet service.
  • Must be willing to fly and live near (or be willing to relocate to) a major metropolitan area with reasonable access to a major airport. 
  • Occasional weekend travel required.
