JOB TITLEAssistant Lab Manager – Metals & Minerals

 

 

SUMMARY: Support the Lab Manager of the Reno Lab by performing essential duties not limited but including, Job Writeups, monitoring lab techs to ensure proper technique and procedure are being performed, creating, developing and writing of lab SOPS as needed, troubleshooting and solving client complaints, finding root cause analysis of lab assay issues and creating solutions for them, chemical analyses as needed, fire assay coverage, ICP troubleshooting, standard making, etc, and tests to support research, product development, quality control, or regulatory compliance for BV Customers. You will work in the laboratory setting to ensure proper procedures are being followed with precision, along with working in an office setting looking over quality data, tracking and creating QC charts, following data trends, and setting up certificates to send out to clients.

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  Include the aforementioned, but not exclusively. Other duties may be assigned as required.

 

All duties are to be carried out in accordance with company policies, including Health and Safety, Environmental, Quality Management System, industry accreditation and applicable laws.

 

Analytical/Laboratory

  • Manage write up of jobs and how they go through the lab.
  • Ensure departments are staffed to meet quality and turnaround time requirements.
  • Ensure accuracy in testing and data reporting.
  • Troubleshooting and finding root cause of client complaints and poor lab data. 
  • Finding solutions to solve client complaints.
  • Develop new methods as necessary.
  • Perform instrument troubleshooting, maintenance, basic repairs, and calibrations as needed.
  • Advise personnel of special test instructions/procedures.
  • Monitoring lab personnel to ensure quality work is being performed and followed accordingly.
  • Training of laboratory personnel in various methods following SOPS.
  • Writing and creating SOPS.
  • Review raw data entered into LIMS, evaluate results, and report final certificates of analysis.
  • Train and evaluate the performance of laboratory staff.
  • Oversee inventory and order supplies.
  • Receiving/approving orders in flex or other systems as needed.

 

Quality Control

  • Monitor performance of the quality control system to ensure effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and produce reports addressing nonconformances.
  • Manage traceability of data.
  • Communicate any discrepancies to upper management.
  • Maintain SQC materials and charts including statistical analysis to determine control status of systems.
  • Maintain efficient and well-organized data collection and filing systems.
  • Monitor performance in proficiency testing programs.
  • Creating CRMS/QCS and organizing the setup to have in house CRMS from it.
  • Monitoring weighing and digestion equipment to ensure operation within defined parameters
  • Preparing reagents and standards for instrument calibration/analysis and maintaining records thereof (Including new standards, method creations, etc)

 

Supervisor Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with multiple teams to ensure smooth workflow.
  • Address complaints and resolve problems.
  • Assign work to each lab technician depending on the workload per day
  • Ensuring lab technicians are staying focused and on task
  • Assigning new learning, training, cleaning, 5S tasks, to lab techs without work.
  • Communication with other labs (internal) Ie. Witham, Shanghai, etc
  • Ensure all lab verifications are being met and done on time (Oven checks, ICP maintenance, Balance verifications, etc)
  •  Report any deviation(s) from documented procedures to the Laboratory Manage
  • Report any nonconforming work, customer samples or test data to the Laboratory Manager.
  • Writing up of jobs of samples (preliminary’s, finals, and retrials) for the lab (LIMS AND SORBY)
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management

 

 

Financial Responsibilities

  • Approving Orders
  • Maintaining vision of Revenue for each month
  • Tracking of inter-group billing
  • Tracking and maintaining WIP to be accurate
  • CAPEX Orders
  • Communication with Vendors

 

Qualification Requirements

  • Metrics driven and solid decision maker.
  • Well organized, disciplined, and self-motivated, with the capability to balance multiple priorities in a high paced environment.
  • Knowledge of analysis, methods, and procedures in Trade Labs and/or Precious Metal Labs.
  • Knowledge of ICP-EOS – Understanding of matrix matching, calibration creations, interferences
  • Sample preparation and analysis performed according to ISO 9001 standards.
  • Fire Assay knowledge – particular on the MMT side.
  • Precious Metals Lab experience
  • Quality Assurance experience dealing specifically with Precious Metals and ICP Data.
  • Supervisor Experience

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Associates or Bachelor’s Degree (Science) is preferred and/or minimum 5 years laboratory experience, of which a minimum of 3 years held in a supervisory capacity.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret technical language. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedures. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and general public.

 

MATHMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to perform basic algebra and statistical analysis. Must possess at least a basic understanding of general chemistry.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and create solutions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

 

 

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Ability to learn computer software programs.  Must have a strong knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
