Position Summary
The BESS / Storage Lead will lead the detailed design and technical definition of the project’s battery energy storage systems. The Expert will be responsible for BESS sizing, operating strategy, battery and power-conversion architecture, BMS/EMS interfaces, thermal management, fire and life-safety systems, warranties, degradation and augmentation planning, capacity and efficiency testing, commissioning and O&M readiness. The role will also provide technical guidance to equipment suppliers and installation contractors throughout design, manufacture, installation, testing and handover.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead detailed BESS engineering, design coordination and technical assurance from design development through procurement, installation, commissioning and operational handover.
- Determine required BESS power and energy ratings based on project use cases, duty cycles, grid requirements, operating strategy, reserve requirements and lifecycle performance targets.
- Develop BESS sizing models considering usable state-of-charge range, depth of discharge, round-trip efficiency, auxiliary consumption, temperature, degradation, availability and end-of-life capacity.
- Define the operating strategy for charging, discharging, peak management, renewable-energy firming, ramp-rate control, frequency support, reserve provision, islanded operation and other applicable services.
- Prepare and review the BESS system architecture, including battery racks, containers or enclosures, power conversion systems, transformers, switchgear, auxiliary systems, controls and collection-system interfaces.
- Define battery-cell and module technical requirements, including LFP or comparable lithium-ion chemistry, performance characteristics, safety certifications, quality controls and traceability.
- Develop technical requirements for the Battery Management System, Energy Management System, power-plant controller, SCADA, protection, metering and remote-monitoring interfaces.
- Define control hierarchies, command priorities, operating modes, state-of-charge management, alarm handling, event recording, cybersecurity and data-access requirements.
- Coordinate interoperability among BMS, EMS, PCS, SCADA, plant controllers, protection systems, meters and the utility or system-operator interface.
- Define thermal-management requirements, including cooling capacity, redundancy, ventilation, temperature uniformity, environmental limits and performance monitoring.
- Develop fire and life-safety requirements covering prevention, detection, gas monitoring, ventilation, suppression, propagation control, emergency isolation, access, signage and first-responder arrangements.
- Coordinate BESS safety design with the Occupational Health & Safety Specialist, civil engineers, electrical engineers, emergency services and relevant authorities.
- Assess site layout, container spacing, access, drainage, flood risk, ventilation, blast or deflagration considerations, security and emergency-response provisions.
- Prepare detailed design criteria, calculations, single-line diagrams, layouts, equipment schedules, technical specifications, bills of quantities and interface-control documents.
- Define performance guarantees for power, usable energy, round-trip efficiency, response time, availability, auxiliary load, degradation, capacity retention and other required parameters.
- Review supplier warranty structures, throughput limitations, cycle limits, operating envelopes, exclusions, augmentation obligations, availability guarantees and long-term service agreements.
- Develop degradation and augmentation strategies to maintain required usable capacity throughout the project life and warranty period.
- Review supplier and contractor designs, calculations, simulations, datasheets, drawings, software descriptions, safety studies, quality plans and method statements.
- Provide technical clarification and guidance to BESS suppliers, PCS suppliers, integrators, installation contractors and commissioning teams.
- Support procurement through preparation of technical requirements, responses to clarifications, bid evaluation, technical negotiations and review of supplier guarantees.
- Develop and review factory acceptance test requirements for battery systems, PCS, BMS, EMS, transformers, switchgear, monitoring systems and integrated controls.
- Witness or support FAT activities, including functional tests, communications tests, protection checks, control-mode verification, safety-system tests and documentation review.
- Develop and review site acceptance, pre-commissioning, commissioning and performance-test procedures, including clear test boundaries, instrumentation and acceptance criteria.
- Witness installation inspections, insulation and continuity tests, protection tests, communications tests, functional tests, charge-discharge tests and emergency-system demonstrations.
- Lead or support verification of rated power, usable capacity, round-trip efficiency, response time, state-of-charge accuracy, availability and thermal performance.
- Investigate equipment or system underperformance, alarms, communication failures, thermal issues, capacity shortfalls and control-interface problems, and recommend corrective measures.
- Ensure O&M readiness through review of staffing, training, spares, special tools, software licences, maintenance plans, emergency procedures, warranties and technical support arrangements.
- Review as-built drawings, configuration files, model files, test records, commissioning dossiers, warranties, asset registers, manuals and handover documentation.
- Prepare design reports, technical memoranda, design-review comments, inspection reports, test reports and commissioning or acceptance recommendations.
- Provide training and knowledge transfer to Client, utility and operations personnel on BESS operation, performance monitoring, safety, maintenance and warranty management.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, Energy Engineering or a related discipline; a Master's degree in a relevant engineering field is preferred.
- Minimum of 8 years of professional experience in battery energy storage engineering, integration, design, supervision or commissioning.
- At least 5 years of relevant experience on utility-scale or grid-connected BESS projects.
- Demonstrated experience on at least two BESS projects, including at least one system rated 10 MW / 20 MWh or larger.
- Demonstrated experience with LFP or comparable lithium-ion technology, BMS/EMS integration, warranties, degradation, thermal management, fire safety, performance testing and O&M.
- Strong experience in BESS sizing, duty-cycle assessment, operating strategy, state-of-charge management, degradation modelling and augmentation planning.
- Experience preparing or reviewing technical specifications, calculations, layouts, single-line diagrams, equipment schedules, bills of quantities and interface documents.
- Practical experience supporting procurement, supplier review, FAT, SAT, installation, commissioning, performance verification and troubleshooting.
- Experience coordinating BESS interfaces with solar PV, generators, grids, substations, SCADA/EMS, protection, metering and communication systems.
- Experience in East Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, high-temperature environments, weak-grid systems, remote sites or internationally financed energy projects is an advantage.
