POSITION PROFILE

 

Job Title:                              Analyst 2

Reports to (title):                Laboratory Supervisor / Laboratory Manager

Department:                        Laboratory

 

Basic Purpose:   What is the overall function of the job? 

 

  • Results oriented to produce high quality defensible analytical data, safely and on time by following applicable Standard Operating Procedures
  • Perform analyses and complex sample preparation proficiently
  • Gain full knowledge with respect to performing analytical procedures and related quality control techniques

 

Key Accountability/Responsibilities:   What specifically is this job expected to accomplish? 

 

  • Review LIMS summary reports to prioritize daily workload for self and junior staff.
  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) when conducting the following work:
    • Perform sample preparation and procedures prior to analyses
    • Perform some basic testing procedures
    • Identify any non-routine samples and seek guidance on procedures for handling
  • Perform more complex sample preparation and analyses
  • Ensure a high level of accuracy in sample preparation and analysis
  • Operate and maintain all necessary instruments and equipment to complete tasks (PC / Mac computers, pipettes, thermal cyclers, automated sequencers, liquid handling instruments, etc)
  • Proactive in ensuring that consumable supplies are available in the lab
  • Meet quality and TAT specifications required by the client and ensure samples are analyzed within holding time requirements
  • Perform method and/or data validation
  • Provide support to ensure that instruments and equipment are maintained
  • Assess and correct problems with all laboratory operations according to SOP guidelines and ISO 17025 regulation criteria
  • Identify and document all known sample deviations, non-conformances, and/or process deviations and report to the Supervisor
  • Provide input to corrective action procedures and report problems and Corrective Actions to the Supervisor
  • Employ proper laboratory techniques to minimize risk of mislabeling, sample mix-up and cross contamination between samples and other materials
  • Provide Supervisor/Manager with updates on workstation status including advance notification of any delays
  • Evaluate and initiate problem solving in all areas of the laboratory
  • Participate in developing Standard Operating Procedures and general work instructions
  • Suggest and help to implement production efficiencies
  • Recommend solutions (technical/staffing), to make lab more effective and competitive
  • Act as a positive change agent in supporting Bureau Veritas new initiatives (operational and cultural)
  • Support and comply with all Bureau Veritas policies, Quality System and Health & Safety program
  • Participates, when requested in lab and Health & Safety meetings
  • Participates, when requested in internal and external audits
  • Provide training and guidance to junior staff
  • Maintain training records and relevant qualifications
  • Keep work area clean, neat and organized
  • All other responsibilities as assigned

 

Skills and Knowledge:  What skills and knowledge are used to carry out job responsibilities and solve problems?

 

  • Post-Secondary school education (B.Sc. preferred) or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated success in the role of Analyst 1
  • Sound knowledge of sample handling procedures to ensure continuity and integrity of samples through compliance with laboratory procedures and quality assurance protocols
  • Knowledge of, and experience with laboratory Occupational health and Safety practices to handle hazardous materials by taking the necessary precautions
  • Ability to mentor junior staff to effect process changes
  • Assesses problems and recommends solutions
  • Willing to learn and continuously update skills and expertise through training
  • Inspires, motivates and participates in building a strong team environment
  • Uses good judgment, trains and assists in resolution of employee relations issues
  • Excellent manual dexterity, record keeping, calculations and problem solving abilities
  • Flexible to perform varying duties to accommodate changing priorities
  • Accurately follows Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and instructions
  • Detail oriented with accurate record keeping skills

  • Experience with Ion Chromatography would be considered an asset.

  • Internal:  Laboratory Operations, Customer Service and Sample Logistics Departments
  • External:

 

Working Conditions:  physical work environment, physical effort, visual and listening attention, and travel

 

  • High level of work production in fast-paced lab environment.  Can involve the repetition of the same process.  Requires patience, tenacity and persistence.
  • Flexible working hours, overtime and shift work
  • Some lifting and carrying (up to 40 lbs) and may involve long periods of standing
  • Hazardous materials are handled using established safety procedures and appropriate personal protective equipment
