Job Summary:
The Building Inspector conducts comprehensive inspections of residential and commercial structures to verify compliance with applicable building codes, regulations, and approved plans. The role also manages inspection‑related projects, provides technical guidance to the public and industry stakeholders, and supports business‑development initiatives. Travel is required to reach inspection sites throughout the assigned coverage area.

Perform Field Inspections
•    Inspect residential and commercial buildings, including structural, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems, for code compliance.
•    Evaluate both structural and non‑structural components against municipal, state, and national standards.
Interpret Codes & Regulations
•    Research, read, and accurately interpret building codes, ordinances, and related statutes.
•    Explain code requirements to the public, contractors, and other stakeholders in clear, written and verbal formats.
Report Preparation & Documentation
•    Produce detailed inspection reports, issue correction notices, and maintain accurate inspection records.
•    Capture photographic evidence using digital cameras and incorporate images into reports.
Customer Service & Stakeholder Interaction
•    Provide professional assistance and advice to homeowners, contractors, and permit‑issuing authorities.
•    Maintain effective relationships with clients, the public, and internal inspection‑management teams.
Project Management
•    Lead or support specific inspection‑related projects, ensuring timelines, quality standards, and budget constraints are met.
Business Development Support
•    Assist the inspection management team with outreach, permit‑processing assistance, and other business‑development activities.
Office & Administrative Tasks
•    Perform routine office duties such as data entry, document filing, and other assignments as directed by the supervisor.
Other Duties
•    Carry out additional responsibilities as assigned to meet departmental objectives.

Education, Certifications, and Experience (required)
Education    
•    Associate degree in Engineering, Architecture, Building Inspection, or related field (preferred). 
•    High school diploma or GED + 2 + years relevant experience (minimum).
Experience    
•    Minimum 2 years of journey‑level experience in one or more of the following: 
a)    Municipal or county inspection services
b)    Construction trades
c)    General contracting 
•    Demonstrated ability to read and interpret construction drawings and blueprints.
Certifications    
•    ICC (International Code Council) certification or equivalent state‑recognized certification (mandatory). 
•    Multi‑discipline certifications (e.g., plumbing, electrical, mechanical) are preferred.
Licensure    
•    TSBPE Plumbing Inspector and Valid Texas driver’s license (required).

•    Vision – Clear distance, near, and adjustable focus vision required for reading plans and inspecting details.
•    Environmental Exposure – Daily exposure to temperature extremes, precipitation, and varying lighting conditions.

Travel Requirements
•    Travel Frequency – Up to 75 % of work time may involve travel to inspection sites.
