API Inspector

Role Purpose Statement:

The purpose of the API Inspector role is to ensure the integrity, reliability, and compliance of fixed equipment such as pressure vessels, piping, and storage tanks in line with API, ASME, and international standards. With certifications in API 510, 570, 653, and 580 etc., the inspector provides technical assurance for inspection, repair, and risk-based integrity programs. The role safeguards asset performance, reduces unplanned downtime, and enhances safety by conducting thorough inspections, applying RBI methodologies, and providing expert recommendations.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

• Conduct inspections of pressure vessels, piping systems, and aboveground storage tanks as per API 510, 570, and 653 requirements.
• Implement and support Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) programs in line with API 580.
• Monitor repairs, alterations, and rerating activities to ensure compliance with codes and client requirements.
• Perform/Supervise thickness measurements, corrosion assessments, fitness-for-service evaluations, and remaining life calculations.
• Develop, implement, and update inspection plans, checklists, and asset integrity databases.
• Identify non-conformities, prepare NCRs, and recommend corrective or preventive actions.
• Ensure inspection activities are conducted in compliance with safety, quality, and environmental standards.
• Liaise with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams to optimize asset reliability.

• Timely completion of inspection schedules and reports as per project and client requirements.
• Accuracy and completeness of inspection reports and recommendations.
• Compliance with relevant codes, standards, and safety requirements.
• Planning effective inspection strategies.
• Effective coordination with cross-functional teams leading to minimal downtime.
• Timely closure of identified non-conformities and follow-up actions.

• Compliance with API, ASME, ISO, ASTM, and LEEA standards in all inspection deliverable as applicable.
• Compliance of inspection activities with API 510, 570, 653, 580 and regulatory requirements.
• Accuracy and completeness of inspection reports and RBI assessments.

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, Metallurgy, or related Engineering discipline (preferred). OR Diploma in relevant discipline.

API certifications: (At least one)

• API 510 – Pressure Vessel Inspector
• API 570 – Piping Inspector
• API 653 – Aboveground Storage Tank Inspector

• Minimum 3-5 years of inspection experience in oil & gas, petrochemical, or power industries.
• Strong knowledge of ASME Section VIII, IX, B31.3, NBIC, and other relevant standards.
• Familiarity with corrosion mechanisms, degradation modes, and fitness-for-service (FFS/API 579).
• Proficiency in NDT methods (UT, MT, PT, RT, PAUT, TOFD).
• Strong report writing, analytical, and communication skills.
• Computer literacy with inspection management systems and RBI software.
• In-depth knowledge of ASME, API, AWS, ISO, and other international inspection standards.
• Good communication and report-writing skills with proficiency in English.
• Familiarity with ASME Section IX, ISO 9712, and other relevant QA/QC standards.
• Strong skills in reviewing WPS, PQR, WPQ, coating specifications, and lifting plans.

• Proficient in inspection and evaluation of pressure vessels, tanks, piping, and pipelines as per API codes.
• Strong expertise in welding inspections including fit-up, consumables, WPS/PQR/WPQ verification, and weld defect identification.
• Skilled in surface preparation, coating application, holiday detection, adhesion testing, and DFT measurement.
• Competence in inspection of lifting equipment, accessories, and rigging gear as per LEEA standards.
• Hands-on knowledge of NDT methods (UT, MT, PT, RT, PAUT, TOFD).
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and international codes.
• Proficiency in preparing inspection reports, NCRs, and recommendations for repair, rework, or acceptance.
• Strong understanding of HSE requirements related to inspection and lifting operations.
• Expertise in inspection of pressure vessels, piping, and storage tanks in compliance with API codes.
• Proficiency in Risk-Based Inspection methodologies and risk ranking of equipment.
• Ability to perform corrosion rate analysis, remaining life assessments, and FFS evaluations.
• Knowledge of welding inspection, repair methods, and QA/QC processes.
• Skilled in reviewing fabrication and repair documentation for compliance.
• Competence in using NDT techniques and interpreting inspection results.
• Familiarity with integrity management systems, CMMS, and digital inspection tools.
• Strong understanding of HSE requirements during inspection, repair, and turnaround activities.
