Bureau Veritas is seeking the immediate hire of a Permit Technician for their office in Kittanning, PA.  The person in this role will support the administration and permitting for the Pennsylvania Uniform Construction Code. They are responsible for the accurate processing of permit applications, maintaining records, and ensuring compliance with applicable regulations. This role requires exceptional organizational, communication, and customer service skills, as well as the ability to perform a variety of administrative and technical duties.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

 

•Requires clerical and technical support duties within the Plan Review and Permits Services Division of the Building Department. Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills and be personable.  Assist walk-in residents and contractors with the building permit application process.

• Answer incoming phone calls and respond to voice mail providing information on the permit process, building department requirements, regulations and procedures.  Must have strong computer skills including Microsoft Office and internal permitting programs.

• Support Scheduling of inspection requests.  Take phone messages for the Building Code Official and inspectors.  Do not schedule appointments for the Building Code Official, unless specifically requested to do so by the Building Code Official.  Have knowledge of the Building Codes and construction is preferred and the candidate will be expected to pursue the Building Code Official certification.

• Log in and stamp applications for plan review.

• Record all zoning permits on a spreadsheet, then match them to building permits and note each match on the spreadsheet. Give this report to the Building Code Official Monthly. This will ensure that a job has not been done without a building permit.

• Receive and review completed permit applications.  Ensure that the application information is accurate and complete by verifying that the contractors’ insurance information, zoning permit, two sets of plans, contact numbers, and correct address including lot number, subdivision name, and directions to the property are included.

 

Required Education/Experience:
We will consider any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities needed for this job.

 

  • Minimum education required: High school graduate (or equivalent)
  • ICC certification preferred, but not required. Candidate will be expected to pursue the Building Code Official certification.
  • Valid Pennsylvania driver's license.
  • Previous experience working in a building, zoning, and/or permitting office in a Zoning Official, Code Enforcement, permitting, or admin role.  
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. 
  • Fluent in verbal and written English; expert at Business English.
  • Operates office equipment, machines, and computers.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases. Familiar with permitting software preferred.
  • Strong service orientation and friendly demeanor.
  • High attention-to-detail and commitment to maintaining confidentiality.  
  • Able to manage workload, multitask, and work independently while advancing self-directed priorities in group settings.
  • Efficient and organized with a strong work ethic and excellent sense of initiative and follow-through.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
