Job Summary:
The Registered Sanitarian conducts field inspections of retail food establishments, public swimming pools, spas, and interactive water features throughout Texas to verify compliance with the Texas Food Establishment Rules, the 2017 FDA Food Code, and the State Standards for Public Swimming Pools and Spas. Inspections are performed primarily from a home office using an iPad, with travel to client sites as needed (≈ 50 % of work time). The role provides on‑site education, problem‑solving, and exceptional customer service while working independently and collaborating with the Sanitation Services team to develop consistent procedures and program improvements.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Plan & Schedule Inspections – 
•    Receive weekly assignment lists, prioritize visits, and schedule travel using a personal vehicle to retail food establishments, public pools, spas, and interactive water features within the assigned Texas coverage area.
Field Inspection – 
•    Food Establishments – Conduct on site evaluations of retail food facilities to confirm compliance with the Texas Food Establishment Rules and the 2017 FDA Food Code (e.g., food storage, temperature control, sanitation, employee hygiene).
Field Inspection – 
•    Pools & Water Features – Perform inspections of public swimming pools, spas, and interactive water features to verify adherence to the State Standards for Public Swimming Pools and Spas (e.g., water chemistry, filtration, safety equipment, signage).
On Site Education – 
•    Provide immediate, clear guidance to owners, managers, and staff on corrective actions, best practice sanitation procedures, and regulatory requirements.
Documentation & Reporting – 
•    Use an iPad to capture photos, record observations, and complete electronic inspection forms in BV’s inspection platform; generate written reports, notices of correction, and compliance certificates as required.
Follow Up & Verification – 
•    Track corrective action status, schedule re inspections when needed, and confirm that deficiencies have been resolved to code standards.
Customer Service & Communication – 
•    Respond promptly to client inquiries via phone, email, or virtual meetings; maintain professional, courteous interactions and promote BV’s service offerings.
Team Collaboration – 
•    Work closely with the Sanitation Services team to share field findings, assist in developing standard operating procedures, and contribute to program consistency across Texas.
Risk Identification – 
•    Recognize emerging public health risks (e.g., allergen control, water borne pathogens) and notify the Director of Sanitation Services with recommended mitigation actions.
Compliance Monitoring – 
•    Ensure all inspection activities are performed in accordance with state and local regulations, BV policies, and documented SOPs.
Continuous Improvement – 
•    Participate in periodic training, webinars, and internal reviews; suggest enhancements to inspection forms, educational materials, and workflow processes.
Attendance & Availability – 
•    Maintain regular, predictable attendance; be available for flexible scheduling (including early morning or evening appointments) to accommodate client needs.
Other Duties – 
•    Perform any additional tasks assigned by the Director of Sanitation Services or senior management.

Education, Certifications, and Experience (required)
Education    
•    High‑school diploma or GED (minimum). 
•    Associate degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, Food Science, or related field preferred.
Experience
•    3–5 years of field experience conducting food‑service or pool inspections
Licensure / Certification    
•    Registered Sanitarian (Texas) or REHS/RS Credential 
•    Certified Pool Operator (CPO) – required. 
•    Additional certifications (e.g., ServSafe, HACCP, Certified Water Safety Professional) a plus.
Professional Knowledge    
•    Familiarity with Texas Food Establishment Rules, 2017 FDA Food Code, and Texas State Standards for Public Swimming Pools and Spas.
Licensing    
•    Valid Texas driver’s license (Class C or equivalent).
Other Requirements    
•    Ability to pass pre‑employment drug screen, motor‑vehicle record check, prior‑employment verification, and criminal background check (if applicable).
