FIELD SUPERVISOR

 

Location: Martinez, CA | Department: Field Operations | Reports To: Operations Manager

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Petroleum Inspector Field Supervisor oversees field inspection operations for Bureau Veritas's petroleum and energy sector clients. This role manages work order distribution, field personnel deployment, quality assurance, and compliance with international inspection standards and regulatory requirements. The Field Supervisor ensures all assignments meet customer specifications while maintaining the highest standards of safety, ethics, and technical accuracy.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Work Order & Assignment Management

  • Receive and process service requests from specialized petroleum clients (written and verbal)
  • Evaluate assignment requirements and determine appropriate inspector qualifications and staffing levels
  • Select and dispatch qualified field personnel to ensure comprehensive coverage of all assignment aspects
  • Create and maintain accurate job files with complete documentation
  • Prepare and issue detailed job orders and laboratory instructions

Communication & Coordination

  • Ensure all required information is clearly distributed to laboratory, clients, and field inspectors
  • Maintain continuous communication with all stakeholders throughout assignment lifecycle
  • Confirm data accuracy with terminal/tank farm personnel and issue verified figures and summaries
  • Provide verbal and written confirmation to clients
  • Coordinate document flow to ensure timely delivery of reports and documentation to clients
  • Proofread formal reports before final release

Quality Assurance & Compliance

  • Verify job conformance to customer requirements and applicable standards (API, ASTM, ISO, regulatory)
  • Review and verify calculations, measurements, and technical documentation
  • Provide constructive performance feedback to staff
  • Report irregularities to management and generate non-conformance reports as required
  • Lead or participate in investigations of discrepancies and quality issues
  • Recommend corrective and/or disciplinary actions as appropriate
  • Coordinate with laboratory regarding sample analysis and results interpretation

Supervisory & Team Management

  • Ensure full and adequate coverage of all field assignments through effective resource allocation
  • Instruct and mentor field staff on job procedures, technical requirements, and safety protocols
  • Provide job-related and safety training; maintain training records and certifications
  • Verify field personnel have appropriate safety equipment and calibrated inspection equipment
  • Conduct field inspector audits and performance evaluations
  • Recognize and discipline staff based on performance metrics
  • Serve as interim field inspector when operational needs require

Operational Support

  • Maintain 24-hour on-call status as directed
  • Represent Bureau Veritas professionally through appearance, conduct, and ethical behavior at all times
  • Support and participate in Bureau Veritas Business Management System (BMS) initiatives
  • Attend required company meetings and training sessions
  • Comply with all Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) procedures and governmental regulations

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Personnel Management: Direct supervision of field inspection staff; assign work based on qualifications and availability
  • Training & Development: Deliver technical and safety training; maintain compliance documentation
  • Equipment Management: Ensure proper maintenance and calibration of inspection equipment and safety gear
  • Performance Monitoring: Conduct regular audits, evaluations, and corrective actions
  • Quality Control: Verify adherence to Bureau Veritas standards and client specifications

 

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED (minimum)
  • 5+ years of field inspection experience or equivalent supervisory role in petroleum/energy sector
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Bureau Veritas HS&E procedures and applicable governmental regulations (EPA, OSHA, state/local)
  • Proven experience with petroleum inspection standards and practices

Technical Knowledge

  • Proficiency with petroleum inspection methodologies and equipment
  • Understanding of API, ASTM, and relevant international standards
  • Knowledge of tank gauging, sampling procedures, and quality control protocols
  • Familiarity with inspection documentation and reporting systems

Language Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents (safety procedures, equipment manuals, regulatory guidelines)
  • Ability to write clear reports, correspondence, and job instructions
  • Ability to communicate effectively with field staff, clients, and management
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred for Martinez, CA location

Mathematical Skills

  • Proficiency with all mathematical operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
  • Ability to work with various units of measurement, fractions, and decimals
  • Competency in calculating rates, ratios, percentages, and interpreting technical data
  • Ability to interpret and prepare charts, graphs, and technical documentation

Reasoning & Decision-Making

  • Ability to analyze complex assignments and develop effective work plans
  • Strong problem-solving skills for multi-variable situations
  • Capability to make independent decisions and communicate clearly to staff and management
  • Ability to prioritize competing demands and manage time effectively

Licenses & Certifications

  • Valid driver's license (required)
  • Valid passport or TWIC card (preferred for refinery/terminal access)
  • Relevant inspection certifications or willingness to obtain (e.g., API, ASTM)

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The following physical activities are regularly required:

  • Sitting: Extended periods in office/supervisory role
  • Standing/Walking: Frequent movement between office and field locations
  • Hand/Arm Use: Handling inspection equipment, tools, and documentation
  • Climbing: Ascending/descending ladders and stairways to access tanks and equipment
  • Lifting: Regularly lifting up to 50 lbs; occasionally up to 100 lbs (with assistance)
  • Sensory Requirements: Close and distance vision, color vision, depth perception, ability to smell (for safety hazard detection)
  • Communication: Talking and hearing for instruction and client interaction
