Marine and Offshore – Bureau Veritas North America
Position Overview
Bureau Veritas seeks experienced and detail-oriented Vessel Inspectors & Auditors to join our Marine & Offshore Division. You will conduct comprehensive inspections, surveys, and audits of commercial vessels, offshore platforms, and marine equipment to ensure compliance with international maritime regulations, classification standards, and safety requirements. This role combines technical expertise, regulatory knowledge, and client-facing professionalism to maintain the highest standards of maritime safety and environmental protection.
Key Responsibilities
Vessel Inspections & Surveys
Conduct initial, periodic, intermediate, and special surveys on commercial vessels (bulk carriers, container ships, tankers, general cargo, offshore support vessels)
Perform hull, machinery, electrical, and structural inspections using approved methodologies
Execute non-destructive testing (NDT) including ultrasonic thickness, visual, magnetic particle, and dye penetrant inspections
Document findings, defects, and corrective actions in compliance with BV Rules and international standards
Issue statutory certificates and class certificates upon successful survey completion
Regulatory & Compliance Audits
Conduct International Safety Management (ISM) Code audits and Safety Management System (SMS) reviews
Audit MARPOL Annex I, II, IV, V, VI compliance and pollution prevention systems
Verify SOLAS, COLREG, and flag state regulation compliance
Perform port state control (PSC) preparation audits
Develop audit reports with findings, non-conformities, and recommendations
Classification & Certification
Apply BV Rules for Hull, Machinery, Electrical, and Automation systems
Determine vessel classification status and recommend class notations
Manage defect tracking and corrective action follow-up
Coordinate with vessel owners, operators, and shipyards on compliance matters
Risk Assessment & Reporting
Identify and assess marine risks (structural, mechanical, operational, environmental)
Classify defects by severity and urgency
Develop risk matrices and corrective action plans
Prepare detailed inspection and audit reports for clients, flag states, and class society records
Maintain accurate documentation in BV's digital inspection platforms and databases
Field Operations
Travel to vessels at ports, anchorages, or offshore locations (domestic and international)
Work independently and collaboratively with vessel crews, operators, and BV colleagues
Manage time effectively to complete inspections within scheduled timeframes
Maintain professional relationships with clients and regulatory authorities
Adhere to all vessel safety protocols and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements
Professional Development
Stay current with evolving maritime regulations (IMO, flag states, BV Rules updates)
Participate in continuous training and certification programs
Contribute to quality assurance and process improvement initiatives
Mentor junior inspectors and auditors as needed
