Job Summary:

Bureau Veritas is seeking a driven Concrete Special Inspector to support immediate Building, Transportation, and Infrastructure projects across New York City. This role is designed for an early-career engineering professional with ICC and ACI certifications and hands-on field experience who is actively building expertise in concrete inspections, code compliance, construction materials testing, and quality assurance.

 

The Concrete Special Inspector will work on active job sites performing inspections of cast-in-place concrete, reinforced concrete, foundations, slabs, footings, concrete placement operations, and associated testing activities, ensuring compliance with NYC Building Code requirements, approved construction documents, and applicable industry standards. This position offers exposure to large-scale, complex projects while working alongside experienced inspectors and engineering teams.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Perform field inspections of cast-in-place concrete, reinforced concrete, foundations, footings, slabs, walls, and related structural elements to verify compliance with approved drawings, specifications, and NYC Building Code requirements.
  • Conduct inspections in accordance with Chapter 17 of the NYC Building Code, ensuring all work meets required quality and safety standards.
  • Verify reinforcing steel placement, spacing, concrete cover, embedments, anchors, and formwork prior to concrete placement.
  • Monitor concrete placement activities, including batching, delivery, placement methods, consolidation, finishing, curing, and protection procedures.
  • Perform and witness concrete field testing including slump, air content, temperature, and unit weight testing in accordance with ACI and ASTM standards.
  • Collect, prepare, and document concrete cylinder samples for compressive strength testing.
  • Verify compliance with approved mix designs, placement procedures, and project specifications.
  • Coordinate with testing laboratories regarding concrete sampling, testing schedules, and strength testing results.
  • Document daily field observations, inspection results, and contractor activities in clear, accurate, and timely reports.
  • Witness required construction testing and special inspections in accordance with project specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Identify, document, and report non-conforming work and assist in coordinating corrective actions with contractors and project teams.
  • Support senior inspectors and engineering staff in resolving field conditions and interpreting construction documents.
  • Review construction drawings, specifications, reinforcement details, and concrete schedules to support inspection accuracy and field verification.
  • Maintain organized inspection records, logs, testing documentation, and supporting compliance records.
  • Communicate effectively with contractors, engineers, testing laboratories, and project stakeholders to ensure alignment on field conditions and inspection findings.
  • Follow all jobsite safety protocols, including OSHA standards and project-specific safety requirements.
  • Assist in maintaining project schedules by performing timely inspections aligned with construction activities.
  • Participate in ongoing training and certification development to expand inspection capabilities and technical expertise.

Education & Certifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture, Engineering Technology, or related field preferred
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) designation or actively pursuing Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) licensure preferred

  • ICC Reinforced Concrete Special Inspector
  • ICC Prestressed Concrete Special Inspector (preferred)
  • ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I (Required)
  • ACI Concrete Strength Testing Technician
  • ACI Concrete Construction Special Inspector
  • NICET Construction Materials Testing – Concrete (preferred)
  • Nuclear Gauge Safety Certification (preferred)
  • OSHA 10-Hour or OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety Certification

Experience:

  • 1–3 years of experience in construction inspection, materials testing, field engineering, or construction support roles on active job sites
  • Direct experience performing or supporting concrete special inspections and materials testing preferred
  • Experience conducting concrete field testing including slump, air content, temperature, and cylinder sampling preferred
  • Hands-on exposure to reinforced concrete construction activities including foundations, slabs, walls, columns, and elevated decks
  • Experience reviewing concrete mix designs, reinforcement details, and inspection documentation preferred
  • Experience supporting quality control and quality assurance programs on commercial, infrastructure, transportation, or industrial projects
  • Internship and field engineering experience with exposure to multi-disciplinary construction teams (engineering, contractors, testing laboratories, and owners)
  • Familiarity with NYC/NJ construction environments, including compliance-driven inspection processes
  • Experience documenting field conditions, testing results, inspection findings, and contractor activities in structured reporting formats
  • Exposure to large-scale projects involving coordination across multiple trades and construction phases
