Job Summary:
Bureau Veritas is seeking a highly experienced Master Special Inspector to lead and execute critical inspections across complex building, transportation, and infrastructure projects throughout New York City. This role is designed for a subject matter expert who brings deep command of the NYC Building Code, a full suite of ICC certifications, and the ability to operate with authority in fast-paced, high-stakes construction environments.
As a Master Special Inspector, you will serve as a trusted technical leader in the field—ensuring all work is performed in strict compliance with Chapter 17 requirements, resolving issues in real time, and upholding the structural integrity and safety of every project you touch. Your expertise will directly influence project outcomes, guide contractor performance, and reinforce quality standards on some of the most demanding construction sites in the country.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Perform and oversee Special Inspections across structural steel, welding, bolting, concrete, and masonry in accordance with NYC Building Code (Chapter 17) requirements
- Serve as the on-site authority, ensuring all construction activities meet approved plans, specifications, and regulatory standards
- Review construction documents, shop drawings, and submittals to verify compliance prior to and during field execution
- Identify non-conforming work, document deficiencies, and work directly with contractors and project teams to drive timely resolution
- Prepare, maintain, and submit accurate, detailed inspection reports in accordance with NYC DOB requirements and company standards
- Coordinate with engineers, architects, contractors, and clients to ensure seamless communication and alignment throughout all phases of construction
- Monitor critical installation activities, including structural framing, concrete placement, and welding operations, ensuring proper procedures and materials are utilized
- Witness and document required testing procedures, including concrete sampling, field testing, and welding inspections
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and industry best practices, ensuring inspections reflect current regulatory requirements
- Support project scheduling by coordinating inspection activities to meet construction timelines without compromising quality or compliance
- Uphold and enforce jobsite safety standards, including adherence to OSHA and site-specific safety protocols
- Provide mentorship and guidance to junior inspectors, reinforcing quality expectations and technical standards
- Act as a trusted advisor to clients and internal teams, offering technical insight and solutions to complex field conditions
- Maintain all required certifications and proactively pursue additional credentials to expand technical capabilities and service offerings

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, or a closely related discipline

Equivalent combination of technical education and progressive field experience may be considered for highly qualified candidates
Certifications (Required)

Master Special Inspector (NYC DOB) – active and in good standing

One of the following:

AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), or

ICC Structural Welding Inspector

ICC Concrete Special Inspector

Certifications (Preferred / Value-Add)

ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I

OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety Certification
Experience:
-
Minimum of 3–5+ years of experience performing Special Inspections on construction projects within New York City
-
Demonstrated experience working on projects of varying size, scale, and complexity (commercial, high-rise, infrastructure, etc.)
-
Strong working knowledge of NYC Building Code (Chapter 17) and NYC DOB requirements
-
Proven ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, and shop drawings with precision
-
Experience coordinating with contractors, engineers, and project stakeholders in active construction environments
-
Track record of producing clear, accurate, and timely inspection reports
-
Comfortable operating independently in the field while managing multiple priorities and deadlines
Skills:
- Deep expertise in NYC Building Code (Chapter 17) and Special Inspections compliance
- Advanced inspection capabilities across structural steel, welding, concrete, masonry, and bolting
- Strong ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, and shop submittals
- Accurate, timely, and audit-ready inspection reporting aligned with NYC DOB requirements
- Confident field decision-making with the ability to identify and resolve non-conforming work
- Clear communication and on-site leadership with contractors, engineers, and clients
