Job Summary:
Bureau Veritas is seeking a driven Special Inspector to support immediate Building, Transportation, and Infrastructure projects across New York City. This role is designed for an early-career engineering professional with ICC certifications and hands-on field experience who is actively building expertise in structural inspections, code compliance, and construction quality assurance.
The Special Inspector will work on active job sites performing inspections across structural steel, welding, bolting, masonry, and concrete systems, ensuring compliance with NYC Building Code requirements and approved construction documents. This position offers exposure to large-scale, complex projects while working alongside experienced inspectors and engineering teams.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Perform field inspections of structural steel, welding, bolting, masonry, and concrete work to verify compliance with approved drawings, specifications, and NYC Building Code requirements
- Conduct inspections in accordance with Chapter 17 of the NYC Building Code, ensuring all work meets required quality and safety standards
- Document daily field observations, inspection results, and contractor activities in clear, accurate, and timely reports
- Witness required construction testing and special inspections in accordance with project specifications and regulatory requirements
- Identify, document, and report non-conforming work, and assist in coordinating corrective actions with contractors and project teams
- Support senior inspectors and engineering staff in resolving field conditions and interpreting construction documents
- Review construction drawings, specifications, and shop details to support inspection accuracy and field verification
- Maintain organized inspection records, logs, and supporting documentation for project and regulatory compliance
- Communicate effectively with contractors, engineers, and project stakeholders to ensure alignment on field conditions and inspection findings
- Follow all jobsite safety protocols, including OSHA standards and project-specific safety requirements
- Assist in maintaining project schedules by performing timely inspections aligned with construction activities
- Participate in ongoing training and certification development to expand inspection capabilities and technical expertise

Education, Certifications & Experience:
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, or related field
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) designation or actively pursuing Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) licensure
Certifications - Preferred
- ICC Special Inspector – Structural Masonry
- ICC Special Inspector – Structural Steel & Bolting
- ICC Special Inspector – Structural Welding
- ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I (or ACI I equivalent)
- AWS - Certified Welding Inspector
Experience
- 1–3 years of experience in construction inspection, field engineering, or construction support roles on active job sites
- Hands-on exposure to structural construction activities including steel erection, welding, concrete placement, and masonry work
- Experience supporting inspection and quality control on commercial, infrastructure, or industrial projects
- Internship and field engineering experience with exposure to multi-disciplinary construction teams (engineering, contractors, and owners)
- Familiarity with NYC/NJ construction environments, including compliance-driven inspection processes
- Experience documenting field conditions, inspection results, and contractor activities in structured reporting formats
- Exposure to large-scale projects involving coordination across multiple trades and construction phases
