POSITION SUMMARY

 

Under the delegation of the Laboratory Manager, the Lead Chemist provides advanced technical expertise for routine and non-routine analytical methods, including setup, calibration, training, troubleshooting, and results interpretation. This role leverages problem-solving abilities to support Bureau Veritas's analytical and testing services, ensuring compliance with international standards and client requirements while upholding the company's commitment to excellence and integrity.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

- Ethics & Integrity: Exemplify and champion Bureau Veritas's Code of Ethics and professional standards

- Safety Leadership: Provide authoritative guidance on chemical safety, equipment operation, and testing protocols; ensure compliance with OSHA and industry safety standards

- Analytical Expertise: Develop and apply methodologies for complex analytical problems where published procedures are insufficient; validate new or modified methods

- Quality Assurance: Champion KPIs and quality management systems; assist in monitoring and assessing QA practices for continual improvement

- Training & Documentation: Document and train laboratory personnel and clients on standard and non-standard methodologies; maintain current knowledge of chemical literature and field developments

- Technical Support: Advise laboratory staff and clients on advanced analytical issues; troubleshoot instrumentation, SQC protocols, calibrations, and quality assurance systems

- Client Relations: Serve as a knowledgeable, professional Bureau Veritas representative to clients

- Operational Support: Perform Laboratory Technician and/or Supervisor functions as needed; assist with regulatory compliance and documentation

- Continuous Improvement: Contribute to process optimization and best practice development within the laboratory

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Step-up leadership as required by Laboratory Manager; may mentor junior technicians and oversee specific projects or shifts.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

 

- Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or related scientific discipline

- Minimum 8 years of related laboratory experience, including at least 3 years in the testing and inspection industry

- OR equivalent combination of education and professional experience

- Preferred: Experience with fuel testing, ASTM methods, or ISO/IEC standards

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

 

- Advanced knowledge of analytical chemistry and testing methodologies

- Proficiency with laboratory instrumentation and data management systems

- Strong written and verbal communication skills

- Problem-solving and critical thinking abilities

- Ability to work independently and as part of a team

- Commitment to safety, quality, and regulatory compliance

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

 

The physical demands described are representative of those required to successfully perform essential job functions:

 

- Regularly required: Walking, sitting, standing, using hands to operate equipment, talking, and hearing

- Lifting/Moving: Up to 50 pounds regularly

- Vision Requirements: Close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

While performing duties, the employee:

 

- Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and with hazardous materials

- Regularly exposed to fumes, airborne particles, toxic and caustic chemicals

- Occasionally exposed to radiation risk and elevated noise levels

- Works in a laboratory setting with appropriate safety controls and personal protective equipment (PPE)
