Bureau Veritas is seeking the immediate hire of a Permit & Zoning Code Enforcement Clerk for their office in Pocono Pines, Pennsylvania. The person in this role with work under the direction of the Zoning and Permitting Manager.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Processes incoming permit applications for plan review and inspections.
- Verifies and accepts application submittals by ensuring all necessary documents are submitted and complete for permit issuance.
- Follows-up on permits submitted to the City.
- Provides exceptional customer service to our internal and external customers.
- Provides copies of inspection reports as requested.
- Answers incoming calls from contractors, City employees, and others requesting inspections to be scheduled.
- Schedules inspections received by phone and/or email.
- Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with co-workers and the public.
- Operates & maintains the day-to-day running of the Zoning office, which may include greeting visitors, answering phone calls, and responding to correspondence.
- Receives and checks all applications for zoning permits and certificates of zoning compliance.
- Issues zoning permits and certificates of zoning compliance for construction.
- Ensures applicants meet the requirements of the regulations for the zoning chapter or subsequent amendments OR that they meet the requirements related to the jurisdiction for conditional uses OR that they are approved via a Zoning Hearing Board or court approval.
- Records and files all applications for zoning permits and certificates of zoning compliance together with accompanying plans and documents. All records shall be open for public inspection.
- Participates in all proceedings before the Zoning Hearing Board, the Planning Commission, and jurisdiction; at their request, furnishes such facts, records, and similar information which will assist them in reaching decisions.
- Responds to complaints regarding Zoning and/or Property Maintenance Code violations.
- Issues enforcement notices and orders to persons, firms, or corporations violating the terms of the Zoning and/or Property Maintenance Code Ordinances.
- Maintains customer-oriented attitude, keeping in mind the best interests of taxpayers.
- Creates and cultivates close working relationships with office staff, other department team members, and partners.
- Works well independently and within a team environment.
- Other duties may be added as needed.
Requirements:
- Minimum education required: High school graduate (or equivalent); Associate's degree preferred
- Experience working within an office setting. 2-5 years of experience working with permits OR relevant experience working within legal, government, or construction-related settings preferred. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Must be a self-starter with ability to manage time well and ability to work well with others.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills. Able to handle all kinds of people.
- Excellent typing, data entry, and clerical skills.
- Computer savvy. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and able to work with different software and databases.
- Understanding of all local and state laws related to zoning, including thorough knowledge of the Sunshine Law and the Right to Know Act.
- Previous experience working in a zoning and/or permitting office in a Zoning Official, Code Enforcement, or admin role. Certification preferred, but not required.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Familiar with permitting software preferred.
- Strong service orientation and friendly demeanor.
- High attention-to-detail and commitment to maintaining confidentiality.
- Able to manage workload, multitask, and work independently while advancing self-directed priorities in group settings.
- Efficient and organized with a strong work ethic and excellent sense of initiative and follow-through.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- This is a full-time role based in our office. We are not able to accommodate work-from-home situations for this opportunity, given the nature of the work.
