TITLE: Laboratory Technician

DEPARTMENT:  OCM Operations 

REPORTS TO:  Regional Manager  

LOCATION:  Suwanee, GA 

 

SUMMARY: Responsible for all day-to-day laboratory operations and management at a local divisional office. Manages operations team consisting of Lab Supervisor, Chemist and Data Entry Supervisor for the facility. Supervises and coordinates activities of personnel engaged in performing chemical and physical tests of various commodities in response to customer requirements. Closely monitors lab-related financial performance and achieves or exceeds budgeted requirements. Serves as the laboratory management representative for the Company at the respective location(s). Provides resource for lab-related customer service, troubleshooting, problem solving and marketing. Represents the policies, ethics, and culture of the company in a leadership role.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND REPSONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be designated. 

  • Ensures all lab staff have adequate resources to perform all aspects of work required. 
  • Ensures all lab staff are adequately trained to safely perform all required job functions and that competency records are maintained. 
  • Ensures corporate policy & procedures in the laboratory. 
  • Manages sales, profits, costs and expenses to meet/ exceed budgeted financial expectations for the laboratory. 
  • Provides employee motivation and champions the quality system, including, Calibrations, Quality Assurance, Training, PTP and lab Quality system. 
  • Maintains an “open door policy” and communicates with lab staff to promote empowerment and accountability. 
  • Obtains and maintains an in-depth knowledge of local market requirements. 
  • Understands customer requirements and organizes lab procedures, schedules and staffing to provide for meeting/exceeding same. 
  • Supports the ISO certificate(s) and manages corrective/preventive actions. 
  • Reviews local laboratory operations for all aspects of the continuous improvement process. 
  • Handles required disciplinary matters in a fair and consistent manner and maintains open communication with the Division Manager and the HR department. 
  • Represents Bureau Veritas by appearance and conduct. Behaves ethically at all times.  Ensures compliance in all areas. 
  • Ensures laboratory practices meet or exceed company policy and industry standards. 
  • Reads, understands and enforces the company Quality and Safety policies. 
  • May on occasion be required to perform the duties of the Lab Supervisor and/or Lab Technicians. 
  • Establishes or adjusts work schedules to meet testing requirements and control costs. 
  • Markets actively for new clients. 
  • Other duties as may be assigned by Regional and/or Senior management. 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Manages lab supervisor(s) (if applicable) and lab technicians. Is responsible for the overall management, coordination, direction and evaluation of the laboratory unit. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training lab employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; 

  

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use of hands and/or finger to feel objects, work tools, or controls; talk or hear and smell.  For certain analytical tests the ability to see color is required, a color blindness test will be taken to determine the ability to be able to perform some of those tests. The employee frequently is required to walk.  The employee is occasionally required to sit; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. 

  

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and with explosive material and is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risks of electrical shock.  The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of radiation.
