Job Purpose

 

The Laboratory Health & Safety Specialist ensures a safe working environment in laboratories. This role focuses on preventing accidents, managing chemical and biological risks, and ensuring compliance with health and safety requirements.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Develop and maintain laboratory health and safety policies and procedures
  • Ensure compliance with local regulations and laboratory safety standards
  • Conduct regular laboratory inspections and risk assessments
  • Identify hazards related to chemicals, biological agents, equipment, and waste
  • Investigate laboratory incidents, spills, exposures, and near misses
  • Prepare incident reports and track corrective actions
  • Manage chemical safety programs, including storage, labeling, and handling
  • Oversee laboratory waste management and disposal processes
  • Deliver laboratory safety training and inductions to staff and students
  • Maintain safety records, permits, and inspection logs
  • Support emergency response planning, drills, and spill response

 

Qualifications & Experience

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health & Safety, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field
  • Professional laboratory or health and safety certification is preferred
  • 2–5 years of experience in a laboratory safety or health and safety role
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory hazards and safety controls

  • Clear communication and training delivery skills
