As we continue to develop Marine & Offshore activities, we are delighted to offer a unique opportunity to join our organisation as Plan Approval Surveyor for our Machinery operations. Position is located within our Mumbai office in India and you will be welcomed in a supportive and collaborative learning environment.

 

Purpose of Position

To ensure compliance of vessel machinery parameters with regulatory standards and classification society requirements through detailed plan approval, supporting safe and efficient ship operations.

 

Major Responsibilities

Core Technical Responsibilities

  • Review machinery and ship design calculations and drawings in accordance with assigned scope to ensure compliance with International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations, classification society rules, and applicable national maritime regulations, under the supervision of the Manager and Head Office.
  • Perform independent technical calculations, analysis, and design reviews, with periodic guidance and oversight from the Manager and Head Office.
  • Support BV surveyors in identifying and resolving technical issues and non-conformances during the ship construction and outfitting phases.
  • Provide pre-contract technical support and consultation to clients, including preliminary design review, feasibility assessment, and regulatory compliance guidance.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports and approval documents documenting compliance verification, calculations, and design assessments for submission to clients and regulatory authorities.
  • Maintain current knowledge of IMO regulations, classification society rules, industry standards (ISO, IEC, IACS), and emerging maritime technologies affecting machinery systems. Participate in technical meetings and audits with clients, shipyards, and component manufacturers to verify compliance and resolve design queries.
  • Document all reviews and approvals in accordance with Bureau Veritas quality management systems and regulatory requirements, maintaining complete and traceable records.
  • Escalate complex or non-standard issues to the Manager and Head Office in a timely manner, with clear technical justification and recommended solutions.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying process inefficiencies and suggesting enhancements to approval procedures and technical guidance.

Client & Stakeholder Management

  • Liaise with clients to identify, assess, and resolve technical issues and design modifications, ensuring timely communication and documentation of solutions.
  • Communicate technical findings, recommendations, and regulatory interpretations with Head Office and other Bureau Veritas offices to ensure consistency and knowledge sharing.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or above in Naval Architecture and Mechanical Engineering, Marine System Engineering, or related fields.
  • Minimum 5 - 8 years of experience in marine machinery systems design, installation and plan approval with strong focus on regulatory compliance and classification requirement.
  • Solid theoretical knowledge of ship design and extensive experience in plan approval.
  • Familiarity with the IMO, classification society rules and relevant national regulations.
  • Strong technical knowledge of marine machinery systems, including propulsion units, auxiliary engines, pumps, HVAC systems and other onboard mechanical systems.
