Freelance Crane and Lifting Specialist – Bureau Veritas UK & Ireland

Bureau Veritas is looking for an experienced Freelance Crane and Lifting Specialist to support our Engineering & Accreditations team. If you’re highly skilled in crane systems, commissioning, lifting accessories and statutory examinations, this is a great opportunity to partner with a global leader.

 

What you’ll be doing

  • Conducting LOLER 9.2 Thorough Examinations (incl. witnessing load testing)
  • Producing first reports of Thorough Examination after installation
  • Inspecting overhead cranes, gantries, electric chain hoists and runway systems
  • Applying standards such as BS7121, BS2853:2011, BS ISO 4309:2017
  • Delivering clear, detailed engineering reports
  • PUWER Assessments and Regulation 6 Inspections
  • Working independently on client sites

 

Experience required:

  • Experience generating bespoke written schemes of examination IAW LOLER 9.3
  • Conducting routine thorough examinations IAW LOLER 9.3
  • Assessing and delivering the requirements under PUWER
  • 5+ years post‑qualification (ideally 10) in a SAFed Cat 1/2 or LEEA‑member role
  • 5+ years LOLER 9.2 examinations & load testing
  • Strong background with overhead cranes, gantries, hoists & runway systems
  • Extensive knowledge of LOLER & PUWER
  • Desirable: experience witnessing FATs & SATs

Welding Knowledge:

  • Good understanding of welding techniques and typical weld applications

Desirable:

  • IPAF MEWP licence (3a, 3b)

 

Qualifications required:

  • HNC, HND, relevant Degree, NVQ Level 4, Full Technological Certificate,1st Class CoC (Marine Engineering), or IEng/CEng
  • Professional Bodies (one of): LEEA Foundation + Diplomas (LAC, MLM, PLM, SUP, BGC) OR SAFed SS01 (min Cat 2, ideally Cat 1) + SAFed H&S Passport

 

General Skills

    • Excellent written & verbal communication
    • Ability to produce structured engineering reports
    • Strong independent judgement and decision‑making
    • Able to work to structured plans and timeframes
    • Ability to identify critical load paths and apply correct test coefficient
