Food Safety Business Unit Manager


Home based – Midlands or London/ South East


We are looking for a Business Unit Manager to join our growing H&S services team in developing and delivering our rapidly expanding consultancy service across the food sector. The role will drive strategy and growth of Bureau Veritas food business within the UK and develop a team of consultants to deliver best in class food and H&S services aligned to client and market requirements.

Key responsibilities include


  • Working collaboratively with the Food Safety Technical Manager to develop best in class services, including associated policies, procedures, processes, templates and consultant training
  • Working collaboratively with Sector Market lead to drive commercial opportunities and grow client base
  • Ownership of the Food Safety Sector Strategic Plan
  • Undertake and deliver technical services for clients in the area of Food Safety
  • Responsibility for HSI Food Safety service line P&L’s, productivity, planning and utilisation to hit/exceed production targets across HSI Food Safety
  • Network across the business, building relationships with Key business stakeholders (Key Accounts / Sales / Commercial Manager/ Service Delivery Manager).
  • Overall people management responsibility Workload / Engagement of teams / Development / Recruitment & Retention Planning.
  • Retaining and attracting the best people in HSI ensuring competent resource is in place at the right to time to the highest standard, and ensuring we have an effective blended workforce to meet workload requirements
  • Audit of staff with regard to technical delivery and overall health and safety compliance.
  • Lead capability improvement at all levels and ultimately provide a succession planning pipeline to the business
  • Be responsible for the management of operations across large accounts for key clients within the Food Sector
  • Analyse Management Information and use information to support decisions and planning inputs.
  • Ownership of all tenders and commercial activity within Food Safety supported by the wider Bureau Veritas sales and bid team
  • Work as a team with other Operations Managers / Business Units to cross-utilize and cross-skill workforce in the most effective and efficient way
  • Working with the HSI Performance Team to effective and timely planning, scheduling, reporting and invoicing
  • Drive employee engagement, ensuring all are bought into Division performance and improvement targets


Candidate requirements


  • Environmental Health Degree
  • MCIEH (Member)
  • Level 4 Award in Supervising Food Safety in Catering
  • Level 3 Intermediate Certificate in HACCP
  • Qualifications aligned to Tech IOSH Level
  • Significant experience overseeing Food Safety and Health and Safety in the Contract Catering and Corporate Office environment
  • Previous experience ensuring compliance to Food Safety and Health & Safety Legislative requirements, including site inspections, auditing, incident investigation
  • Comfortable liaising with a broad range of stakeholders at all levels of an organisation
  • Experience developing Food Safety Management Systems
  • Excellent report writing and presentation skills
  • Customer/service delivery focused
