Position Summary

This position will be focused on providing our business partners with technical support and guidance support related to Advanced Materials and Sustainability needs of their consumer products. This position will develop and maintain productive client relationships through professional services by applying industry standards, materials expertise and associated regulatory requirements to various consumer products for major clients.  Assist in protecting the client's brand by actively participating in developing, implementing and measuring continuous improvement to the client's quality process and aiding in risk mitigation strategies. Provide technical support to the client and liaise with the Technical Services (TS) teams as it relates to support, consultation, interpretations and governance in Advanced Materials and Sustainability.  

Objective

To provide applied consultation, technical support and quality assurance services for the client in the areas of Advanced Materials and Sustainability/ Chemical Management best practices and any associated specifications, standards, regulations and research.  To provide outstanding technical consultation and product testing support to the client and their vendor partners.

Major Roles & Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance and direction to internal and external stake holders related to Advanced Materials and their connection to Sustainable materials and any associated regulatory requirements related to consumer products. 
  • Drive development for Advanced Materials and Sustainable practices for the technical portions of client meetings, presentations and seminars and develop and deliver service line training presentations for client and supplier seminars.
  • Act as the Technical Lead to support the Global Sales Initiative for Sustainability Services.
  • Help to define and bring focus to the wide range of Sustainability service offerings based upon internal and external client feedback.  
  • Provide direction and guidance on the industry best practice and potential advantages/ disadvantages of a wide range of Advanced Materials including: polymer, metal, biomaterials and textile based materials and their composites.
  • Provide direction and guidance on existing testing facilities and typical testing requirements for performance evaluation and/or classification of advanced materials.
  • Guidance on testing/methods BVCPS should incorporate and/or expand to facilitate testing of advanced materials.
  • Assist in the development of new test methods/ capabilities and serve as the Global Technical leader to provide technical consultation to lab network.
  • Understanding and preferably have existing connections to industry leading labs in the Advanced Materials space. 
  • Review customer inquiries and patterns of service requests that fall outside the scope of BVCPS services and estimate market potential and operational impact for BVCPS global network.
  • Partner with the Business Development (BD) and Account Management (AM) to ensure the successful integration of new services for existing clients and assist with technical input for the Request for Proposal (RFP) process.
  • Provide opportunities for revenue generation and margin improvement through new services and new customer base.
  • Contribute to a mutually beneficial client / service provider relationship:
  • Manage, analize and communicate technical issues/questions.  In conjunction with TS, research solutions as needed and provide recommendations for resolutions and required product improvement for product hazard assessment, compliance and performance requirements.
  • Support AM in developing strong relationships with the client, Production, Designers, Merchants, Vendors and BVCPS labs globally.
  • Investigate consumer complaints and product failures by investigating historical reports such as past Line Review comments, test reports, communication with sourcing offices, etc., in order to identify root cause of failure and corrective or preventative action.
  • Contribute to special projects (i.e., competitor product studies, manual updates, etc.) as requested by the client and/or internal business partners.
  • Keep up to date on technological changes in assigned areas of responsibilities through industry publications, seminars and working with Subject Matter Consultant (SMC) in TS.
  • Attend seasonal product line reviews and participate in product development meetings.
  • Support Account Tesm in preparing power point presentations, conducting Merchant and vendor training, developing training materials and agenda.
  • Primary BVCPS technical contact for all regulatory issues/questions associated with assigned categories for clients.
  • Assist the lab to evaluate products submitted for hazard assessment and applicable standards. 
  • Identify and communicate expectations for products to all parties at any stage of product life cycle.
  • Provide information, as needed to handle product failure, field complaints, and other issues that may arise during or after production.
  • Provide technical consultation to both internal and external clients including suppliers and vendors.
  • Provide technical support in the development of client standards and / or revision of existing standards.
  • In conjunction with Information Resource Canter (IRC), perform applied research to support standards development or research.
  • Attend related consumer product conferences needed to keep knowledge and skills current.
  • Use outside consultants and internal resources where needed.
  • Interface with local staff members and with other BVCPS locations to ensure global technical consistency regarding regulatory requirements interpretations, client requirements and operations and process activities.
  • Provide training to clients and other Technical Services staff as needed.
  • Other duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Engineering Background (i.e. material science, aerospace or mechanical engineering, etc.) is a must.
  • General understanding of analytical chemistry and restricted substance/ chemical management.
  • General understanding of responsible sourcing, recycled materials, product life cycle and impacts of chemicals and materials on landfill and groundwater.
  • Must be technically competent in the area of hazard assessment, quality, regulations, standards, and requirements relating to consumer products.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and process improvement skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to interpret technical information and translate into common terminology.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral, written, presentation and communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize, coordinate, delegate and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to identify client needs and priorities and make adjustments to his/ her job function in order to meet those needs.
  • Ability to work well under pressure to handle crisis situations and balance several tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with others internally and externally (including both clients and competitors).
  • Must possess strong work ethic and excellent client service skills to ensure effective, responsive client interaction (internal and external).
  • Must be personable and work well independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Must be willing to travel domestically and internationally

Experience and Educational Background Required for the Job

  • 4 year degree in Materials Science, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering with a focus on advanced composites is required. M.S. or Ph.D. a plus. 5+ years working in the advanced-composites / materials industry.
  • 4 year degree in a related field will be considered along with suitable experience in the Advanced Materials and/or Sustainability fields
  • Suitable experience with consumer product design, development or compliance assessment
  • Suitable experience with customer services and/or direct customer interface.
  • Background and understanding of analytical chemistry and/or lab experience preferred.
  • Manufacturing and/or product design experience preferred.
  • Relevant experience in marketing, product development or business development preferred.
  • MBA a plus.

Special Requirements

  • Ability to travel up to 20% of the time in the USA and/or Canada, with limited travel internationally
