Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) Department

Full Time Permanent - Burnaby, BC



As a LABORATORY TECHNICIAN, your responsibilities are:


  • Performs analysis on both water and solids samples.
  • Performs sample preparation, water extractions, humidity cell maintenance & operation, static tests, and analyses using manual and automated techniques including pH, conductivity, Eh, acidic,  alkalinity, and kinetic reporting.
  • Assists with the set-up of lab tests for the analysts as necessary.
  • Meets quality and TAT specifications required by the client and ensures samples are analyzed within holding time requirements.
  • Identifies and communicates procedural non-conformances with the lab manager.
  • Employs proper laboratory techniques to minimize the risk of mislabeling, sample mix-up, and cross-contamination between samples and other materials.
  • Provides general lab support.
  • Provides manager with updates on workstation status including advance notification of any delays.
  • Adheres to Maxxam Code of Ethics Policy.
  • Supports and complies with all Maxxam policies, Quality Systems, and Health & Safety programs.
  • Participates, when requested in department and health and safety meetings.
  • Participates, when requested in internal and external audits.
  • Keeps work area clean, neat, and organized.
  • Maintains training records and relevant qualifications.
  • Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned by Senior Staff.


You are an ideal LABORATORY TECHNICIAN if you have:


  • Minimum Diploma from a Technician Institute (chemistry preferred) or post-secondary school education with at least 1-year laboratory experience.
  • A positive outlook with an ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient in LIMS would be considered an asset.
  • Good time-management, communication, multi-tasking, and priority-setting skills.
  • Ability to be adaptable and flexible to a changing environment.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Detail orientated & good record keeping skills.
  • Ability to accurately follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and instructions.
  • Ability to learn quickly.
