Job Title: Laboratory Technician
Reports to: Laboratory Supervisor / Laboratory Manager
Department: Trace Organics
Location: Burnaby. B.C.
Full-Time
Basic Purpose:
Responsible for performing sample preparations and to provide general lab support in the analysis of samples, in accordance with departmental standard operating procedures and health and safety policies.
Key Accountability/Responsibilities:
- Review LIMS summary reports to plan and organize daily work
- Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) when conducting work
- Perform sample preparation and procedures prior to analyses
- Perform some basic testing procedures
- Identify any non-routine samples and seek guidance on procedures for handling
- Meet quality and TAT specifications required by the client and ensure samples are analyzed within holding time requirements
- Identify and communicate procedural non conformances to Supervisor
- Employ proper laboratory techniques to minimize risk of mislabeling, sample mix-up and cross contamination between samples and other materials
- Provide general lab support
- Provide supervisor/manager with updates on workstation status including advance notification of any delays
- Adhere to Bureau Veritas Code of Ethics Policy
- Support and comply with all Bureau Veritas policies, Quality System and Health & Safety program
- Participate, when requested in department and health and safety meetings
- Participate, when requested in internal and external audits
- Keep work area clean, neat and organized
- Maintain training records and relevant qualifications
- Other duties as assigned
Skills and Knowledge:
- B.Sc. with a focus in Chemistry or a technical diploma
- Experience with GC instrumentation and analysis would be an asset
- Positive outlook with a ability to work in a fast paced environment
- Good time-management, communication, multi-tasking and priority setting skills
- Ability to be adaptable and flexible to a changing environment
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Detail orientated & good record keeping skills
- Ability to accurately follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and instructions
- Ability to learn quickly
Working Conditions:
- High level of work production in fast paced lab environment
- May require flexible workings hours, overtime and shift work
- May involve long periods of standing
- · Hazardous materials are handled using established safety procedures and appropriate PPE
- Some lifting and carrying
The salary range for this role is $19.97-$21.00
Pay within this range varies by work location and may also depend on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and market location.
