The ideal candidate will have a passion and inquisitiveness for ensuring foods are safe and wholesome.  The Microbiology Supervisor is a results orientated leader that produces high quality defensible analytical data, safely and on time in our ISO Accredited Food Microbiology laboratory. 


The working Microbiology Supervisor organizes and directs staff to maintain a good working environment and ensures continuous improvement in productivity and efficiency.  Maximizes human, equipment and financial resources and ensures that they are used appropriately.  The Supervisor holds competency to perform sample preparation and sample set up for both quantitative and qualitative microbiology workflows.  This position has full knowledge to performing food microbiological procedures to include indicator organisms and rapid PCR assays.  Suggests new processes & procedures that will increase Bureau Veritas’ market share, profile and profitability. 


Samples in a food microbiology laboratory might include food ingredients, ready to eat foods, pet food, agricultural products such as grains and legumes.  Microbiological analysts to include indicator organisms such as Aerobic Colony Count, Coliforms, E.coli, Staphylococcus, Yeast and Mold.  Various microbiological techniques such as petrifilm and plating methods.  Rapid pathogen analysis to include PCR assays for Salmonella, Listeria and E.coli 0157:H7



  • Leads and develops staff – including responsibility for recruitment of new employees, setting objectives, evaluating performance and expectations, coaching and mentoring, working jointly with employees in development of their career path, ensuring that adequate training is provided.
  • Co-ordinates requests or recommends resource planning e.g. need for additional staff or equipment within the food microbiology laboratory
  • Ensures methods in use meet current and proposed regulatory and ISO guidelines.
  • Acts as microbiology technical resource for Manager, Client Services, Sales and staff
  • Monitors laboratory supplies and equipment
  • Supports and complies with all Bureau Veritas’s policies, Quality System and Health & Safety program.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Gradual Increase of Responsibility within a microbiological laboratory
  • Demonstrated success in the role of Team Lead and/or Project Facilitation leading a team.



  • Excellent understanding of aseptic technique and cross contamination mitigation within the food microbiology laboratory.
  • Ability to accurately follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and instructions within the food microbiology laboratory to include AOAC, FDA BAM, USDA MLG and customer specific methods. 
  • Assesses problems and recommends solutions.  
  • Excellent up-to-date knowledge of laboratory process and automation to include quantitative and qualitative food microbiology methodology and how to stream line for efficiencies. 
  • Pathogen technologies to include BAX-PCR, 3M-MDS, BioRad PCR.  Diagnostic experience to include Salmonella serology and pathogen confirmation workflow.
  • Math skills to understand dilution factors when plating and reading

B.Sc. in a Science related discipline. (Biology, Microbiology or Food Science)  Other degrees may be acceptable depending on the amount of direct laboratory experience.  Clinical microbiology experience may be considered

Working Conditions:

  • May involve long periods of standing.
  • Some lifting and carrying (up to 10 kgs).
  • Requires flexible working hours, overtime and shift work.
  • Hazardous materials are handled using established safety procedures and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
