Laboratory Analyst (Forensic Item Examiner) - Human DNA Lab

 

 

As a Laboratory Analyst, your responsibilities are,

  • Using validated methodology performs screening and testing of a variety of casework materials (forensic and non FTA paternity samples) for the identification of body fluids, and samples areas appropriately for body fluids and/or endogenous DNA as well as known comparison samples for DNA analysis.
  • Maintains accurate and detailed notes of all testing and sampling performed; maintains continuity and integrity of casework materials to prevent mislabeling, item/sample mix up, contamination, loss or degradation.
  • Organizes work and co-ordinates with others within the Department to meet TATs for forensic and paternity/immigration casework.
  • Prepares reagents and supplies and ensures adequate reagents and laboratory supplies are available by monitoring quantities and submitting purchasing requests.
  • Performs administrative review of final reports to check for clerical errors, clarity etc.
  • Follows good housekeeping practices for laboratory areas and own office area.
  • Uses instruments and laboratory equipment and keeps them in good working condition.
  • Reviews scientific literature and other relevant publications to maintain current knowledge in the Human DNA field.  Attends conferences/workshops as appropriate.
  • Reviews and recommends revisions of SOPs, WIs and forms.
  • Assists in training of junior staff, as required.
  • Participates as required in the development/validation of new procedures and/or instrumentation for human DNA analysis.
  • If required, provides testimony in court about laboratory procedures and protocols conducted in the case under investigation.
  • Complies with Bureau Veritas’ quality system, ethics, privacy and security requirements and the accreditation requirements of relevant accrediting bodies (SCC) by following the Quality Manual for the Department, all relevant SOPs and WIs and completing accurately all forms related to the required duties.
  • Other support duties (such as lab clean up and admin reviews) as required.

You are an ideal Analyst, if you have [Minimum Requirements]:

  • Post-Secondary school education (B.Sc. preferred) in forensic or biology related areas
  • Demonstrated success in similar laboratory roles
  • Sound knowledge of sample handling procedures to ensure continuity and integrity of samples through compliance with laboratory procedures and quality assurance protocols.
  • Knowledge of, and experience with laboratory Occupational health and Safety practices to handle hazardous materials by taking the necessary precautions.
  • Assesses problems and recommends solutions.
  • Willing to learn and continuously update skills and expertise through  continuous education opportunities.
  • Inspires, motivates, and participates in building a strong team environment.
  • Uses good judgment, trains and assists in resolution of employee relations issues.
  • Excellent manual dexterity, record keeping, calculations and problem-solving abilities.
  • Flexible to perform varying duties to accommodate changing priorities.
  • Accurately follows Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and instructions.
  • Detail oriented with accurate record keeping skills.
  • Good time-management, communication, multi-tasking and priority setting skills.
  • Strong computer skills
  • Positive outlook with an ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Adapts to a changing environment.
  • Works both independently and as part of a team
  • Learns quickly.
  • Must be able to obtain appropriate security clearances issued by PWGSC and RCMP.
