The Structural Engineer will be an integral part of the BV Architecture & Engineering team. The candidate will collaborate with the Principal Structural Engineer and inter-disciplinary teams on a broad range of project types and sizes. The ideal candidate has experience independently delivering commercial projects as a Structural Engineer. The role of a Structural Engineer is to work independently on small and medium projects, and as a team leader of larger projects responsible for the work of Structural Engineers. The Structural Engineer will be able to evaluate, select, and specify engineered systems or products for a project.
Ideal location is in Irvine, CA or Western US city.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other job-related duties may be assigned in conformance with state and federal regulations.
- Follow best practices and company standards for technical excellence and delivery.
- Ensure all completed projects comply with relevant codes, regulations, and quality standards.
- Deliver structurally sound designs capable of withstanding all required loads as per applicable codes.
- Monitor project progress to ensure timely completion within budget constraints.
- Establish and enforce design protocols aligned with relevant codes and industry standards.
- Provide guidance to civil engineers on best practices in building design and execution.
- Analyze project objectives and perform detailed structural calculations.
- Design structural components for buildings, bridges, and other structures using advanced computer software. Develop 2D and 3D models utilizing tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, and RISA.
- Recommend appropriate materials based on structural requirements and cost efficiency.
- Collaborate with contractors and provide onsite guidance to construction teams to ensure structural integrity.
- Oversee project management, including budget tracking and maintaining a comprehensive project database.
- Review shop drawings, offering constructive feedback and technical support to team members.
- Conduct field visits to assess project viability and progress, providing detailed reports as needed.
- Maintain strong client relationships through regular communication, updates, and collaborative decision-making.
- Stay current with industry trends, new materials, and innovative design techniques.
- Protects operations by keeping company information confidential. Use of professional discretion and judgement is mandatory.
- Demonstrates BV’s guiding principles in support of the company's strategic goals.
- Follows all documented policies, Standard Operating Procedures, and Work Instructions applicable to the position and support of BV's quality standards and strategic initiatives.
- Maintains safe and clean work area by complying with all procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Must be able to meet the physical demands of the job.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience:
- A Master’s in Structural Engineering.
- Proven project management experience.
- Demonstrated leadership experience, guiding teams to successful project outcomes.
- 10+ years of structural engineering experience with a strong technical background in structural design.
- At least 5 years of experience producing technical drawings for commercial projects.
- In-depth knowledge of construction materials, including concrete, steel, light gauge steel, and wood, along with associated construction methodologies.
- Comprehensive understanding of industry codes such as IBC, CBCM, ASCE 07, ASCE 41, ACI, and AISC.
- Proficiency in design software, including AutoCAD and Revit.
- Advanced skills in structural engineering design software, such as RISA, AutoCAD, Mathcad, ENERCALC, and RAM Concept, for steel structures, concrete floors, and foundation design.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- Licensed Structure Engineer (SE) in CA
- Valid driver's license required with no significant MVA points/violations (clean driving record).
- Employees who incur $2,000 or more per year in company-related travel expenses will be required to obtain a Corporate Credit Card. Employees who incur less than $2,000 per year in company-related travel expenses will be required to have sufficient personal credit to cover their business travel costs.
Other Qualifications:
- Working knowledge and application of structural design codes, standards, and applicable building codes.
- Strong knowledge of structural systems, seismic design, construction means and methods, materials, and industry standards.
- Ability to communicate both verbally and in written form concepts and ideas to Architects, Engineers, and Owner representatives.
- Ability to check the work of others for accuracy and completeness and manage time to meet project budget and schedule.
- Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.
- Highly collaborative spirit and experience working in a team
- Problem-solving skills to quickly address issues that arise on-site and keep projects on track
Language Ability: Ability to draft reports, business correspondence, and standard operating procedures. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from clients, peers, and technical field staff.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Technology Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be proficient in operating a computer, having knowledge of word processing software, spreadsheet software, and project management software, to include AutoCAD, Revit, RISA, Mathcad, ENERCALC, RAM concept structural engineering design software, Microsoft Suite and business specific software and other project specific applications. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to operate an electronic tablet in the field for live data collection.
