Position Overview
BV Architecture & Engineering is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to lead the structural design and delivery of commercial projects with precision, independence, and technical excellence. This role is ideal for a licensed structural engineer with deep experience managing projects from concept through construction, and who thrives in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.
As a key member of our structural team, you will be responsible for independently delivering small to mid-sized commercial projects and serving as a technical leader and mentor on large-scale assignments. You will evaluate, design, and specify structural systems that are resilient, efficient, code-compliant, and constructible—across a range of building types and markets. Structural design work will span commercial, institutional, and public sector projects.
Key Responsibilities

Independently deliver the structural scope of commercial projects from schematic design through construction administration.

Lead structural design for buildings and structures including tenant improvements, core & shell developments, mid-rise office, education, civic, and industrial facilities.

Develop and coordinate design documentation using AutoCAD, Revit, and structural analysis software such as RISA, RAM Concept, ENERCALC, and Mathcad.

Perform structural calculations and select appropriate systems and materials based on performance, cost, constructability, and code compliance.

Ensure designs meet applicable codes and standards, including IBC, CBC, ASCE 07, ASCE 41, ACI, and AISC.

Conduct field visits and site assessments to evaluate existing conditions, support construction progress, and ensure implementation of structural intent.

Collaborate with architects, MEP engineers, contractors, and owners to resolve technical issues and maintain project schedules.

Provide technical review of shop drawings, RFIs, and submittals.

Maintain documentation, track budgets, and support internal QA/QC protocols.

Stay current with industry innovations, materials, and design methodologies.
Qualifications

Master’s degree in Structural Engineering preferred.

Licensed Structural Engineer (SE) in the State of California (required).

10+ years of progressive structural engineering experience, with a minimum of 5 years independently delivering structural design for commercial buildings.

Proficiency in design and drafting software: Revit, AutoCAD, RISA, RAM, ENERCALC, and Mathcad.

Extensive knowledge of materials including concrete, steel, wood, and light-gauge steel.

In-depth understanding of structural systems, seismic design principles, and building code applications.

Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical solutions to internal teams and external stakeholders.

Field experience coordinating with contractors and reviewing as-built conditions.

Ability to manage multiple priorities and project deadlines.

Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

Ability to travel to project sites as needed.

Capacity to work remotely with reliability and self-direction.
