JOB TITLE: LABORATORY TECHNICIAN

 

SUMMARY: The laboratory technician performs laboratory tests to determine chemical and physical properties or composition of various products such as coal, biomass, fluorspar, and various metals and minerals for the purposes of quality control, process control, or product development by performing the following duties.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING. OTHER DUTIES MAY BE ASSIGNED.

Operates laboratory equipment and instruments such as furnaces, centrifuge, calorimeters, analytical balances, spectrophotometer, ICP-OES, various elemental analyzers, hot plates, and other equipment.

Tests materials such as coal, coke, and biomass for various physical and chemical properties including ash content, volatile matter, moisture, sulfur, and calorific value.

Tests materials such as iron ore, fluorspar, and steel for properties including purity, contaminants, and moisture.

Tests samples of manufactured products to verify conformity to specifications.

Records test results on standardized forms and writes test reports describing procedures used. May be asked to prepare charts and graphs.

Cleans laboratory equipment. Calibrates laboratory instruments.

Prepares chemical solutions according to standard formulas.

Works a rotating schedule that will include some weekends and holidays. Must be available to work on an on-call basis.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to do some basic algebra, calculus, and trigonometry.

 

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSE, AND REGISTRATIONS: Valid driver’s license required.
