Laboratory Chemist - Martinez, CA

Pay: $30.00 - $40.00 per hour depending on experience.

 

SUMMARY: Oversee and maintain laboratory testing requirements as needed for customer requests. Maintain, trouble shoot and repair Laboratory Equipment. Responsible for SQC Charts of laboratory instruments. Chemist is expected to oversee the quality control systems necessary to ensure that information generated by the Laboratory is generated in accordance with business needs of the Branch and Region, and in conformance with the Company’s Quality Management System. Assists and monitor lab related Key Performance Indicators, specifically related to turn around time and accuracy of data to achieve or exceed budgeted requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Calibrate, maintain and operate analytical instrumentation/test equipment.
  • Implement Instrument operation and maintenance procedures for the laboratory instrumentation, which includes troubleshooting of instrument problems and instrument applications.
  • Review and Maintain Quality Control (QC) records and other technical data.
  • To document and train others in laborory methodologies.
  • To evaluate continually the safety of laboratory working conditions and arrange for necessary corrections to be made.iTo adhere to professionalism and to the principles of the scientific method, basing decisions on education, experience, observation, and deduction.
  • Monitoring, measuring, and assessing quality assurance practices and protocols for continual improvement.
  • Where necessary, troubleshooting instrumentation problems, SQC, calibrations, and quality assurance practices and protocols.
  • Review Job Nominations and prepare laboratory for daily job requirements.
  • Conduct meetings to inform laboratory of incoming nominations, quality/safety procedural changes, customer requirements, training requirements, new methods, etc…
  • Understands customer requirements and organizes lab procedures and works with management to organize schedules and staffing to provide for meeting/exceeding same.
  • Fosters customer confidence in Bureau Veritas laboratory work.
  • Ensures the laboratory has adequate resources to perform all aspects of work required.
  • Assists in ensuring laboratory staff is adequately trained to safely perform all required job functions and that competency records are maintained.
  • Ensures compliance with all corporate policies and procedures in the laboratory.
  • Recommends expense savings measures.
  • Drives laboratory performance through communication with lab staff and management to promote empowerment and accountability.
  • Supports the ISO certificate(s) and manages corrective/preventive actions.
  • Reviews local laboratory analyses and provides recommendations for the continuous improvement process.
  • To carry out the above responsibilities, and all others, which may be assigned, in a manner demonstrating support for and adherence to the Company’s Safety Policy and Procedures, Quality Policy and Procedures, Ethics Policy, Environmental Management System, Vision and Strategy, and to exercise good judgment, common sense, and diplomacy in so doing.
  • Approximately 15% of traveling is required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s Degree in Physical or Life Science. LPG laboratory experience, a plus. Gas Chromatography experience, a plus. Analytical method development and method validation experience with various lab instruments, especially GC, and Petroleum related testing equipment, a plus.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to properly interpret technical reports related to chemicals and their properties. Ability to interpret scientific formulas. 

 

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
