Digital Engineering Lead - AssetCalc Application

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Engineering Lead to support and sustain our critical AssetCalc application, a 16-year-old .NET platform that serves as a cornerstone for our Facility Condition Assessments business line. This role is ideal for a seasoned technology professional who understands the nuanced art of maintaining a mature software system while meeting evolving business needs. The successful candidate will be responsible for guiding a small engineering team, ensuring application reliability, and strategically managing technical debt without disrupting ongoing business operations.  Ideally seeking Ruby on Rails development experience.

In addition to managing the existing toolset, there is an exciting opportunity to drive the development and eventually manage the AssetCalc 2.0 application, currently planned to be built in Ruby on Rails by an outside consulting group and migrated in-house at completion. You would work closely with the product team on roadmap planning, new feature development, bug and existing feature enhancements, etc. Also critical is managing the bandwidth, capacity and throughput of internal and external developers during the sustainment phase of the tool (approximately 24-36 months out).

Technical Stewardship and Application Strategy

The ideal candidate brings a comprehensive understanding of .NET application architecture and a strategic vision for sustainable software maintenance. At this stage of their career, they are a technical leader who thinks in broad architectural patterns rather than day-to-day coding. Your primary objective will be to keep the AssetCalc application robust and responsive, making incremental improvements that address security standards, client requests, and business demands. Success in this role means maintaining system stability, with 4 9’s of uptime (99.99) annually.

Team Dynamics and Leadership

Reporting to the Director of Delivery Excellence and working closely with a project manager, you will manage a nimble team of five engineers. Your role transcends traditional development, focusing on translation and communication. You will serve as the critical bridge between the product management team and the engineering team, transforming product initiatives into clear, actionable technical tasks. This requires exceptional interpersonal skills, a service-oriented mindset, and the ability to calibrate task complexity based on individual team member capabilities.

Technical and Operational Expectations

With a minimum of five years of .NET experience (though not necessarily full-time coding in recent years), you bring deep technical expertise and the ability to maintain a comprehensive mental map of the application's architecture. You will be responsible for defining interfaces between our .NET and FileMaker applications, conducting thorough code reviews, and maintaining high code quality standards. Your communication skills will be paramount—you must articulate technical constraints, project scopes, timelines, and potential challenges to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

You will also be responsible for interacting with leadership on operational and client-facing needs, and keeping abreast of the latest developments of competitors and potential technical partnerships. Once trained, you should be comfortable engaging directly with senior leaders and clients on our tools and best practices.

Collaborative Environment and Organizational Context

This role exists within a non-technical facility inspection and testing company, requiring adaptability and strategic thinking. You will navigate a complex ecosystem that includes occasional meetings, interface with product managers, and guide a small but critical technology team. The position demands more than technical skills—it requires a holistic approach to software stewardship, balancing immediate business needs with long-term technical sustainability. Your ability to document architectural decisions, seek clarification, and align technical direction with business goals will be key to your success.
