FIRE ASSAY TECHNICIAN
JOB SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Laboratory Manager, the Fire Assayers are responsible for fusing, cupeling, and processing client’s incoming samples.
Work conditions and physical requirements include: light to heavy work (must be able to lift and carry 25 lbs for 25 feet) involving chemical hazards. Working in hot environment.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Comply with the OHS Act and Regulations, BV Group Policy and Procedures, High Grade Management System Policies and Procedures and ISO standards applicable to the Fire Assay Position.
- Act in a safe and professional manner and wear appropriate attire including the required personal protective equipment (PPE).
-Able to use fusion ovens, cupellation ovens, tongs, fire assay equipment, and other fire assay equipment.
- Carry out analytical fire assay procedures in accordance with documented SOPs and other work instructions.
-Weekly upkeep on fire assay ovens including laying of new bone-ash beds, etc.
- Ensure proper functioning of Analytical operations by:
-Calibration of fusion and cupellation ovens and other equipment as needed
- Has basic computer skills
-Able to troubleshoot issues with poor fusions and poor cupellations.
-Stocking of fire assay with supplies (lead, flux, cupels, borax, silica, etc).
-Updating order list when supplies are low.
-Making and refilling reagents for fire assay.
-Proper cleaning and organization in fire assay
-Follow strict procedures
-Practicing good housekeeping. (Cleaning of stations before and after use, general lab cleaning, etc).
- Communicate general issues to the Laboratory Manager as appropriate.
- Report any deviation(s) from documented procedures to the Laboratory Manager.
- Report any unsafe condition(s) observed in the department to the Laboratory Manager.
- Report any nonconforming work, customer samples or test data to the Laboratory Manager.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.

The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, or crawl. The employee must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is occasionally required to work in hot conditions 90+ degrees during the summer months. The employee is required to work in front of hot conditions (Ovens) year round. Employee will wear a respirator during his shift at work.
