Job Title: Outsourced Laboratory Manager

Reports to: Director, Operations – Minerals Canada and Alaska

Job Summary:

 

Reporting to the Director of Canadian Operations, the Outsourced Laboratory (OSL) Manager will manage all daily operations of a Laboratory based at a client site. The OSL Manager will have a critical role with setting up and commissioning the lab prior to beginning production. Once in production, the OSL Manager is accountable to ensure that all client expectations and BV’s standards are met. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Responsible for all laboratory operations including sample login, sample preparation, fusion process, XRF analysis, data validation & reporting
  • Monitor workload and shift activities to meet test deadlines and lab operations requirements
  • Responsible for employee recruitment, employee management and employee training
  • Responsible for maintaining, servicing and upgrading lab equipment as needed
  • Maintain and update SOP’s for sample handling, preparation and XRF analysis.
  • Perform method validation and ensure calibration of instruments for accuracy and precision.
  • Conduct QA/QC programs to validate XRF data and analytical methods.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot analytical performance issues and document resolutions
  • Prepare reference materials for calibration of instruments and keep instruments within limits
  • Manage lab consumables and inventory, ensuring adequate supplies to allow for seamless lab operations
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and efficiency enhancements in various areas of the laboratory
  • Provide KPI performance reports to client and BV senior management
  • Lead a safety-first culture, ensuring all staff, contractors and visitors wear PPE and follow safety rules.
  • Complete incident investigation reports for any first aid injury, developing corrective actions to prevent recurrence
  • Ensure proper environmental compliance in waste disposal, dust control, and handling of hazardous materials.
  • Develop and implement emergency response protocols.
  • Ensure effective use of the Return-To-Work (RTW) Program for employee injuries.
  • Mange P&L statement for lab, accountable to meet agreed-upon financial results.
  • Serve as BV’s primary contact with client site personnel
  • Participating in client or BV production meetings as required
  • Responsible for overseeing special projects as requested by client
  • Works as part of a bigger team with other BV managers to continuously improve systems
  • Proactive monitoring of analytical charts and other quality issues that may arise during routine sample analysis, with documented resolution to issues.
  • Ensure compliance with all client site HSE/HR policies and procedures as well as BV Group Policies and Procedures and ISO standards applicable to the position
  • Conduct safety tailgate meetings with staff regularly
  • Conduct PPE audits
  • Participate in monthly worksite inspections of their area
  • Ensure hazard assessments and critical task analyses are done within their area of responsibility
  • Monitor staff and hold them accountable for their individual safety performance
  • Act in a safe and professional manner and wear appropriate attire including the required personal protective equipment (PPE)

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

 

  • Employee management – Recruitment, interviewing, onboarding, training, providing both technical and safety training, scheduling, conflict resolution, and progressive discipline as required.
  • Ensure technical and safety training is continuously updated and conducted for all employees.
  • Actively participate in hazard identifications and reporting - (MAIA)
  • Other duties as assigned from time to time

Education, Certifications, and Experience (required):

 

•              Science degree, or diploma in science with relevant experience in a similar laboratory environment

•              Chemistry experience and superior understanding of chemistry principles

•              5-10 years laboratory experience with at least 2-years’ experience in a leadership position

•              Previous experience with XRF fusion and analysis is an asset

•              Previous experience with minerals sample preparation is an asset

•              Training on forklifts and manual handling practices are assets

•              Experience in FIFO and mine camp living

 

Physical and Environmental Conditions:

 

  • Fly-in, Fly-out (FIFO) position consisting of 14-days in, 14-days out cycle.
  • Available to address enquiries from Laboratory Supervisors during off cycle.
  • 12-hour shifts working in a Minerals lab.
  • Potential exposure to dust generated from the sample preparation process, working with acids and other laboratory chemicals.
  • Manual handling of client samples

 

Travel Requirements:

 

  • Fly-in, Fly-out on a 14-day cycle. Candidate will need to be based in Western Canada for ease of transport to site.

The salary range for this role $115K Annually with a Bonus plan and Camp allowances. Travel allowances for Fly-In, Fly-Out candidates may apply.
