Job Title: Branch Maintenance Mechanic

Reports to: Branch Manager

Department: Minerals Canada

Location: Whitehorse, Yukon

Part-Time, casual as needed

 

Basic Purpose:

 

Reporting to the Branch Manager, Branch Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for the installation, repair, troubleshooting, rebuilding, and preventive maintenance of equipment and BV WHI building.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Comply with all occupational safety regulations, laboratory safety procedures and as required, requirements of ISO Quality System SOPs.
  • Act in a safe and professional manner and wear appropriate attire including the required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Assist in maintaining, inspecting, troubleshooting, and repairing equipment—such as pulverizers, crushers, block heaters, furnaces, shakers and pumps—using manufacturer’s manuals, circuit diagrams, and blueprints.
  • Responsible for maintaining, checking alignment, and replacing sheaves, bushings, belts, pillow blocks, and bearings on make-up air units and exhaust fans if needed. 
  • Safe operation of hoisting and lifting equipment, including chain hoists, manual and electric jacks, boom lifts, and forklifts, for installing, troubleshooting, rebuilding, and maintaining equipment, as well as for storing and organizing materials and parts.
  • Responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing pneumatic and hydraulic systems as well as belt and chain driven equipment throughout the facility.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of building environmental systems, exhaust fans, make up air units, dust collection systems.
  • Assist in the monitoring, documentation and record keeping of equipment maintenance and calibrations. 
  • Conduct general maintenance of building and grounds as required. 
  • Responsible for the installation, repair, troubleshooting, maintenance of equipment used throughout the facility, such as furnaces, shakers, etc. 
  • Operate hand and power tools and equipment such as reciprocating saws, jigsaws, hand drills, drill press, and grinders to modify or create required materials for the repair of equipment. 
  • Responsible for troubleshooting, repair, maintenance and rebuilding or overhauling (including dismantling, part replacement, assembling) of crushing machines and pulverizes for the Division using gantry crane, impact wrench, hydraulic pump, 50-ton press, etc. 
  • Responsible for the inventory control of equipment items, i.e., belts, bushings, bearings, sheaves, etc. 
  • Ensure the repair logs are kept up to date and properly updated according to company SOPs. Other duties or task as required or assigned by Manager and/or Supervisor. 

 

 

Skills and Competencies:

 

  • Able to manage heavy loads up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis, and up to 75 lbs. with team lift.
  • Able to work at heights above 30 feet from boom lift systems with required Fall Protection.
  • Experience in operating hand operated tools & equipment, being able to perform measurements accurate to 0.01mm for shaft and bearing alignments of equipment.
  • Effective communication skills in English, both verbal and written. 
  • Strong organizing and time management skills. 
  • High trades aptitude required; intention to enroll on ITAs Trades Apprentice Programs is an Asset. 
  • Ideally with 2+ years’ experience with mechanical and/or building repairs. 
  • Millwright trade experience an asset. 
  • HVAC trade experience an asset. 
  • Electrical trade experience is an asset. 
  • Plumbing trade experience an asset. 
  • Fall protection certificate an asset. Will be provided. 
  • Boom lift operation certificate as an asset. Will be provided. 
  • Forklift operation certificate an asset. Will be provided. 

 

Physical and Environmental Conditions :

 

  • Working in potentially dusty environments 
  • Manual lifting of equipment and tools 
  • Wearing Personal Protective Equipment, including respirator requiring staff to be clean-shaven
